A deadly road accident near Kaggalipura Lake on the outskirts of Bengaluru has claimed the life of a 40-year-old, raising new concerns about road safety in the region. The motorcycle and lorry accident is the third to take place in the vicinity within the past 10 days. The repeated crashes have raised local concerns, and people are calling for urgent action to improve traffic management and road infrastructure.
The accident occurred on Monday evening around Kaggalipura Lake. The motorcycle rider suffered severe back and waist injuries after the collision with the lorry, said the police. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, but there it was said he deteriorated and died later.
The deceased is 40-year-old Nagaraj, a resident of Talaghattapura. Nagaraj was a plumber and was the main provider for his family. His death has left his family devastated and once again exposed the human cost of road accidents on busy and accident-prone routes in Bengaluru.
This was the latest crash that was reported to have been very serious, as it occurred just days after other accidents in the same vicinity were reported. Residents say three accidents have taken place close to Kaggalipura Lake in the last 10 days. The repeated accidents have raised some questions about whether the road infrastructure and traffic arrangements are now in place to accommodate the mass vehicles that will be moving on the road.
The local residents have claimed that the increased number of accidents has been caused by the lack of a bypass road. They said heavy vehicles and other traffic still follow the existing highway with two-wheelers and other road users. Residents say a bypass would not only divert heavy traffic away from the chaotic road and prevent vehicle accidents but also decrease accidents as well.
We have the traffic situation around Kaggalipura; we need to look at the road situation and traffic movement. We need to act soon, and we need to improve road visibility and road safety measures.
Two-wheeler riders experience very dangerous stretches in the presence of heavy commercial vehicles. Motorcycle protection is significantly less than that of larger vehicles, so a collision at moderate speed can cause life-threatening injuries. Injuries to the back, waist and head are especially serious and protective equipment and speed limits are also very important.
Nagaraj’s death also brought home the toll road accidents can have on families. As a plumber and a key earning member of his family, his sudden death will come off as an emotional and financial blow to his family. These cases are just one example of why road safety should not be regarded as a traffic-management issue but also as a matter of public safety and livelihoods.
The latest accident would have to be further investigated to determine why there are so many crashes near Kaggalipura Lake. Residents have pointed to the lack of a bypass as one of those reasons, but an official investigation would be needed to determine what caused the collision and whether it was due to road design, traffic volume, vehicle speed, etc.
The death of 40-year-old Nagaraj is another warning that we must do so because of the dangers of accident-prone roads in Bengaluru. Residents say this is the third accident in just 10 days, and they hope the government will do something before another family suffers a similar loss.
