A young woman has filed a police complaint against IT services company Tech Mahindra after she was fired from her job due to her health problem.
The incident has led to conversations on employee rights, workplace policies, and the treatment of women in the corporate sector.
The complaint said Bhavana took 13 days of leave after announcing to the company she was ill because she was suffering and that she was ill. She said that instead of getting help, she was constantly being contacted by company management via emails asking her to return to the office as soon as possible.
Bhavana said that when she told management of her illness, she was still under pressure. She said when her health worsened she asked for more leave. However, the company questioned the length of her absence and repeatedly asked her to resume work immediately.
She added that the pressure caused stress on her mental health when she was already suffering from health issues and so when she was already going through it, a lot of stress, she said. But eventually, without a legitimate reason, the company fired her, so she went to the police seeking justice.
Bhavana also raised concerns about the workplace environment. She said employees were required to ask permission to use the washroom during office hours.
Calling the work culture “very stressful,” she expressed disappointment with what she said was excessive monitoring and insufficient empathy for the employees.

She said, “I have never seen such a company anywhere," she said. Bhavana had to ask software companies to take a more humane attitude towards women employees, especially women employees.
She said female workers often need to balance work with family and health problems. Organizations have to treat staff with dignity and have some flexibility in the case of genuine medical emergencies and not try to pressure them or discipline them, she said.
Police have received her complaint. It is not clear if there is any formal case registered or whether the matter will be investigated under labour law or other laws. So far no official response from Tech Mahindra on the allegations has been given.
The incident has reignited the conversation of employee welfare, mental health, medical leave policies, and workplace ethics in India’s IT industry. Labour experts say companies are expected to adhere to existing employment processes when they are taking medical leave and termination, so that they are in line with labour laws and employment contracts.
And social media has also been filled with opinions that many people want a fair investigation and that both the employee and the company should present their version before conclusions are drawn.
The complaint will be investigated and any laws or legal rights are likely to be violated in the course of the investigation.
