Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Bihar Assembly Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has written to Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary about the hardships faced by PDS dealers in the state. In a letter to the newspaper, Yadav said ration dealers are struggling because of organized corruption, record inflation and government indifference.
In his letter, Tejashwi called for immediate action on the problems faced by fair price shop dealers and pointed out the need for greater transparency in Bihar’s public distribution system. This development happens in the context of PDS dealers continuing to play an important role in subsidised foodgrains distribution to eligible beneficiaries.
Tejashwi raises eight-point demand
According to the report, Tejashwi’s letter lists an eight-point set of demands that are meant to address the problems of PDS traders in terms of finance, technical and administrative issues. Among those is that of taking action against the alleged irregularities of Bihar State Food Corporation (BSFC) warehouses.
The RJD leader has called for strict action over complaints involving alleged corruption, irregularities and short weighing of foodgrains. He also sought measures to make the system more transparent and accountable.
Another major issue is technical problems related to e-POS machines, servers and weighing systems. Tejashwi argued that dealers and beneficiaries should not be forced to bear the consequences of technical failures within the distribution system.
Demand for better grievance redressal
Tejashwi also urged the Bihar government to create an effective grievance-redressal mechanism at the district and block levels. PDS dealers need a clear channel through which operational problems can be reported and resolved quickly, he said.
The letter also calls for an end to what Tejashwi described as needless administrative pressure and punitive action against dealers. He has proposed a system where true problems are examined before dealers incur penalties.
The RJD leader also proposed regular “tripartite meetings” with the state government, departmental officials and representatives of fair-price dealers. Such meetings, he said, would help identify issues and find solutions in the long term.
Focus on dealer payments and financial stress
The financial condition of PDS dealers is also a matter of concern in the letter. Based on Tejashwi's demands, the reports show that he has pressed for action on pending commissions and dealer remuneration, such as an honorarium of ₹30,000 a month.
PDS dealers are a crucial link between government food-security programs and beneficiaries. Any disruption in their operations could potentially affect the delivery of essential foodgrains to vulnerable households.
Political significance of the demand
Tejashwi’s intervention also adds a political dimension to the issue. As Leader of Opposition, he has increasingly used public welfare and administrative concerns to question the state government.
The latest letter puts Bihar's ration distribution system under renewed scrutiny. The allegations made by Tejashwi are political ones and need to be verified by the government. But his demands raise questions of transparency, payments, technology and administrative pressure in the PDS system.
The Bihar government will now be under pressure to respond to the concerns and demands raised by the RJD leader. Any actions on dealer payments, warehouse failures, technical failures and grievance mechanisms must be taken in the interest of ration dealers as well as millions of people who rely on the state’s distribution system of food.
