Three people died in a tragic road accident near Chennai as a speeding lorry collided with a car in Tiruchi-Chennai National Highway at Maduranthakam, near Maduranthakam on Friday morning in a tragic road accident.
But the deaths are a signal of the issue of road safety on one of Tamil Nadu’s busiest highways still a concern.
According to initial reports, the accident took place near Maduranthakam, about 80 km from Chennai. They were in a car travelling from Puducherry to Chennai when a lorry hit it. The car was badly damaged and all three people died in the collision.
Local residents and passersby rushed to the accident site immediately after the crash. Within a few minutes local police and emergency response teams were also in the area and started rescue operations. But the victims died later on in the incident before they could be transported to a nearby hospital.
The authorities temporarily controlled traffic on Tiruchi-Chennai Highway to clear the road and avoid congestion. The damaged vehicles were taken off the road by crane and traffic resumed after a few hours.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the cause of the accident. Overspeeding, driver fatigue, reckless driving, or mechanical failure are among the reasons officials are investigating. Witness statements are being recorded as part of the investigation.
Road accidents in Tamil Nadu are still a major issue, primarily on highways connecting Chennai city with southern districts and neighboring states. Safety experts have said that strict enforcement of speed limits, good lane etiquette, regular vehicle maintenance, and drivers' awareness in general need to be improved for road safety.
The deceased's identities have not yet been formally identified so far as authorities are still in the process of informing their family. A post-mortem examination will be conducted before the bodies are turned over to relatives.
Hence, this has raised more calls for better road safety measures on highways where heavy commercial drivers move at high speeds alongside passenger cars. Better surveillance and stiffer penalties for traffic violations could curb accidents, and speed-monitoring cameras, the experts say.
People are warned to be careful, avoid speeding, stay away from heavy vehicles and remain alert while driving on highways. This is another reminder of the need for responsible driving and traffic rules to save lives.
