An explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Thrissur, Kerala, the first of its kind to hit South Kerala, killed five people and injured others, triggering panic at a spot where industrial safety had become in grave jeopardy.
The blast was at a firecracker unit, in which workers appeared to be handling explosives, when a blast ripped across the building. It hit so hard that the building and all neighbouring neighbourhoods were shattered, and rubble was left unguarded and in huge clusters throughout the building.
They heard a loud explosion that rang out in a brief moment, along with dark waves of smoke that shot up into the air, witnesses said. People panicked, fled from their homes; emergency services were called as soon as possible. Rescue was begun, and the police, fire and rescue forces arrived. Five workers died in the blast, officials said, and others reported varying degrees of injuries.
The wounded were pushed to nearby hospitals, and several are believed to be in critical condition. Rescue fighters struggled to reach workers who may have remained trapped in the rubble. Early indications in an investigation may suggest mishandling of very flammable materials or a failure to adhere to safety protocol, which may have led to the explosion.
Firecracker units do not come without specific safety measures: storing chemicals, proper tools installation and so on. Authorities are now looking to see if the unit was operating as those regulations intended. A comprehensive probe has been scheduled to figure out what exactly caused the blast, said a top police official.
Forensic scientists were on hand to investigate the site, and officials are now reviewing the unit’s license and safety records, he said. If the behaviour is determined to be negligent, the perpetrators are likely to be extremely serious indeed. Sadly, this is a reminder and a sign of the dangerous aspects of the manufacture of firecrackers. Over the last 10 years, they have been connected to a series of incidents.
And even a small departure from safety guidelines can be deadly, experts say, since the materials used to make them are extremely volatile. But local officials have said immediate assistance for the victims’ relatives will be provided all the more. Soon, compensations would be introduced, and measures to combat any occurrence such as this one might also be addressed.
The explosion renewed arguments over how we might implement safety regulations in hazardous applications. It’s something Labour groups and activists wanted to make even harder: tighter controls, more frequent inspections and better training of those making and working with explosive materials.
There will be laws, laws that will ensure that the injured person recovers and that justice shall be served to the victims. It drives home the need for heavy-duty safety standards in industries that are equipped to handle explosives.
