A concern raised on social media has drawn attention to toll plazas' functioning and the number of toll booths that are open at busy times. On X Twitter page, several booths in a toll plaza are often closed and only a few lanes are open.
According to the post, commuters are finding only three or four toll booths operational in the toll plaza despite having multiple lanes. The post questioned the need for a wide toll plaza with multiple lanes if many are not used and vehicles have to wait in queues.
The social media post urged authorities and toll plaza operators to keep the maximum number of booths open until the toll-taker can run all the booths when traffic is heavy. It said an increase in lane availability could reduce waiting times and speed up the passage of vehicles through the toll point.
The concern is not limited to a single location. The X post also stated that similar situations can be seen at several toll plazas where multiple lanes are available but only a part of them may be operating at a given time.
Toll plazas are built with multiple lanes to handle traffic efficiently and reduce congestion. However, the number of lanes that can actually remain operational at a particular time can depend on traffic volume, staffing, toll collection systems, lane management, and operational requirements.

I wanted to share a concern that I frequently notice while travelling through this toll plaza.
Whenever I pass through here, I notice that several toll booths remain closed, while only 3-4 booths are operational.

However, the experience for commuters can be frustrating when the queue is so long and queueing still happens in traffic congestion even with the added toll lanes.
Just to be fair, even a small reduction of operational lanes for the longer lines can make it difficult for drivers to get out of the toll plaza when there are many cars arriving in the vicinity with all those who are driving at the toll plaza in a short period of time.
The social media post then called for better lane management and more booths to be operational when possible. The request is to make sure the infrastructure at toll plazas is being used efficiently and commuters don’t have to take longer breaks.
A more general question of traffic management at toll collection points is the problem. The digital toll collection has grown increasingly prevalent and commuters are looking forward to ease of movement and shorter lines when they’re driving along major roads and highways.
In fact, whether all booths can be operated in every toll plaza depends on the local conditions and the operational needs. But the concern on social media puts the emphasis on ensuring that there is enough lane availability whenever traffic levels warrant it.
The post has asked toll plaza operators to investigate and make lane improvements to get passengers on the road in a timely manner so that they don’t wait for hours and hours.
