The incident happened at a BWSSB sewage treatment plant in the Varthur area of Bengaluru. The workers were performing their daily duties at the drainage treatment facility when they lost their balance and fell into a large sewage tank, the workers said.

Emergency services were immediately on the scene, and rescue teams rushed there. One of the workers was pulled to safety very shortly after the incident and is said to be out of danger. Two others have not yet been found, and an intense search and rescue is still being carried out.

The missing workers have been identified as Brijesh, who is a native of Bihar and Akhilesh, who is from Tamil Nadu. The workers could have been swept deeper into the tank due to the volume of wastewater in the tank, officials said.

Fire and Emergency Services personnel have been handling the rescue since the incident was reported. A safety team of engineers and workers with specialised equipment and rescue equipment are diligently searching inside the treatment tank. The tank has more than ten feet of sewage water in it, and visibility and access are very limited so far. Officials say the operation has been particularly challenging.

Rescuers have deployed grappling hooks and other recovery tools to try to find the missing workers. The thick wastewater and hazardous environment put many efforts on hold, so rescue teams have to proceed carefully to ensure the safety of the rescue personnel.

Officials on the site said all the efforts are about finding the missing workers as soon as possible. More people and equipment are on hand as well.

The incident has once again raised awareness of workplace safety at sewage treatment and wastewater management facilities. Such environments are high-risk because of toxic gases, confined spaces, slippery surfaces, and deep water tanks. Safety experts stress that the use of harnesses, protective equipment, and supervision is essential to prevent accidents.

Residents gathered around the facility when news of the incident spread, expressing concern for the missing workers and their families. Many have called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that led to the accident and whether reasonable safety measures were in place at the time.

Once rescue operations are finished, authorities will investigate the accident. Investigators likely will probe whether any standard operating procedures were followed and whether any negligence caused it.

In the meantime, the families of the missing workers are still waiting anxiously for news from rescue teams at work all the time. Search efforts will continue until the missing workers are found, officials have said.

The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by workers involved in sanitation and wastewater management services. It also underscores the urgent need for improved safety mechanisms and continuous monitoring at critical infrastructure facilities across the country.

This will be updated as rescue operations progress and authorities release additional information regarding the accident.
