India's rich agricultural heritage has got another big boost with the Geographical Indication (GI) tag going to cumin (jeera) and fennel (saunf) from Unjha in Gujarat.
It is a landmark victory for farmers, traders and the spice industry, further cementing Unjha’s status as one of the world’s most important spice markets.
Unjha, located in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, is known to be the country’s leading trading center for cumin and fennel. It is a hot and dry city with great spices and its soil is full of it. The GI tag is there to recognize that and to ensure that only the spices grown in the region are marketed by the name of Unjha.
A Geographical Indication tag is a form of intellectual property that identifies products from a certain geographical area where a certain quality, reputation or characteristic is linked to that location. Just as Darjeeling Tea and Basmati Rice, Unjha cumin and fennel are now protected from imitation and misuse.
That recognition will also help the local farmers in terms of the market value of their produce. GI certification guarantees authenticity and quality which can lead to premium pricing in the domestic and international market. This could lead to higher incomes for the thousands of farmers who depend on spice cultivation to make a living.

The GI tag will also be beneficial to India’s spice exports. India is already one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of spices and the inclusion of Unjha’s cumin and fennel in the GI registry expands the country’s competitive edge in the world market.
Exporters can leverage the certification to attract international buyers looking for authentic, traceable and high-quality agricultural products.
Not only does the economic gain come from the recognition, but it also preserves the cultural and agricultural heritage of the region. Traditional cultivation methods, seed selection and post-harvest processing have been passed down from generations of farmers in Unjha. GI status is in place so that we can preserve these practices, as well as sustainable farming and local knowledge.
The development also aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, which urges consumers to promote indigenous products and local industries. The GI tag has promoted the recognition of Unjha spices and the recognition of Indian agricultural excellence on a global level.
Industry experts say the certification will enhance branding, reduce counterfeit products from the market, and would boost investment in quality control, packaging and value-added spice products. It also solidifies India as a trusted supplier of world-class agricultural products.
Unjha's cumin and fennel GI recognition is not only a legal assurance but also an affirmation of India’s diversity of agriculture, farmers’ hard work, and the longevity of one of the most celebrated spice-producing areas of the country.
It will help create long-term economic opportunities while preserving Gujarat’s unique flavor identity.
