The Indian Navy has received another MH-60R Seahawk maritime helicopter. The US Embassy confirmed that the ship had been delivered under the 2020 defence procurement agreement between India and the USA. The embassy also added that 2 more MH-60R helicopters would be coming to India soon to enhance India's naval aviation capabilities.
The procurement agreement signed in 2020 covers 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, which are produced by Sikorsky's division of Lockheed Martin. These helicopters will be delivered in phases as part of India's larger strategy to modernize its naval fleet and enhance maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.
The MH-60R Seahawk is one of the world’s most advanced multi-role naval helicopters. It’s designed for maritime operations and is capable of performing anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), maritime surveillance, search and rescue, vertical replenishment, medical evacuation and fleet support.
The helicopter offers advanced avionics, world-class radar systems, electro-optical sensors, sonar, electronic support systems, and secure communication, and is extremely useful for situational awareness and operation. The sophisticated mission systems enable it to track and engage submarines and surface vehicles under harsh weather and sea conditions.
The helicopter is a valuable asset, and one of its key strengths is the ability to operate in all-weather environments. The MH-60R can be deployed from front-line warships, including destroyers, frigates, and aircraft carriers, and extends the reach of the Indian Navy well beyond the capabilities of ship-based sensors alone.
The phased induction of the Seahawk fleet is an important part of India’s naval modernization programme. As maritime activity increases in the Indian Ocean Region, advanced helicopters with long-range surveillance and anti-submarine capabilities are essential to maintain maritime domain awareness and safeguard sea lines of communication.
The induction of more MH-60Rs will also further strengthen India’s ability to monitor strategic waterways (e.g., to respond to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, search and rescue efforts, and multinational maritime exercises with partner countries.
The India-US defence partnership has increased significantly in recent years through military exercises, technology cooperation, logistics agreements and defence procurements. The MH-60R acquisition is one of the most important defence collaborations to enhance interoperability and enhance regional maritime security.
The helicopters complement the ongoing modernization effort in the Indian Navy that includes indigenous warships, aircraft carriers, advanced submarines, maritime patrol aircraft, unmanned systems, and next-generation surveillance technologies. All these elements make for a stronger and more networked maritime defence posture.
Experts are also noting that the Seahawk has an advanced anti-submarine warfare capability that is especially critical at this time of increasing submarine presence in the Indo-Pacific. The combination of airborne sensors, dipping sonar, sonobuoys, and precision weapons helps with underwater surveillance and deterrence.
With one more helicopter now delivered and two more aircraft coming soon, India is steadily building one of the world’s most capable naval aviation fleets. The continued induction of MH-60R Seahawks is a manifestation of the continued commitment of New Delhi towards maritime security, operational capability, and the protection of national interests in the Indo-Pacific, as well as a step towards deeper defence cooperation with the United States.
