The annual pilgrimage to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir has resumed after remaining suspended for six days due to adverse weather conditions and safety concerns.
So many devotees were waiting for permission to go on their spiritual journey to one of India’s most visited tourist spots.
The pilgrims resumed the yatra after a detailed safety assessment of the trekking route and weather conditions. The pilgrimage was temporarily halted as heavy rain and landslide risk were reported along the traditional route from Katra to Bhawan. This was done for the safety of pilgrims only, officials said.
After the weather had improved, teams from the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, local administration, disaster management authorities and security agencies conducted inspections and allowed devotees to resume the pilgrimage. Needed repairs and clearing work were also carried out along vulnerable parts of the path.
Thousands of pilgrims waiting in Katra were excited to hear of the announcement. Devotees set off early in the morning, singing religious hymns in the sacred cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. This pilgrimage, to which millions of people visit every year, is one of the biggest Hindu pilgrimages in the country.
Pilgrims are being asked to be careful and follow safety guidelines, and the doctors are giving advice on how to travel properly. Medical facilities, emergency response teams and security personnel are on the ground for a safe and smooth journey.
Weather advisories have also been advised before the pilgrims go on their journey, officials said.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has also said it still intends to provide basic services for pilgrims such as accommodation, sanitation, drinking water and healthcare facilities. Battery car service, helicopter operations, and other facilities are expected to operate according to the weather.
Local businesses in Katra, like hotels, restaurants, and transport operators, will also be able to benefit from the return of the pilgrimage. The temporary suspension had hurt tourism activities in the region, and the restart is expected to boost the economy.
Due to the huge number of devotees, security arrangements have been made better. The government is monitoring the situation on a 24-hour basis and has expressed that any future decisions about the yatra, as it relates to the weather situation and public safety, will be made based on its current situation and will take into account the latest weather and the safety of the public.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra is a symbol of faith and devotion, drawing Indian and international pilgrims.
When the pilgrimage returns to a full-fledged schedule after six days of suspension, they will be able to pray for the goddess’ blessing while ensuring the safety and well-being of the devotees.
