Many people are experiencing a heavy world. Prayer is, to a large extent, an act in which the human element of faith, thankfulness or desperation is part of everyone. But sometimes life comes with images, which push us back to the nature of ritual and the animal spirit (as though we are in an animal state and our lives represent a small part of human life). One of these moments was while a dog was kneeling with worshippers in a church, its paws pressed together as if in prayer. The emotion and feeling of solidarity and unity inspired that and in turn put into words the nature of unity, solidarity and the bond that is formed between humanity and animals in order to survive and survive when it comes to this dog.
Towards the church, it was a momentous prayer. Wooden pews, tiled floors and a speaker at the podium seemed to be in place. A brown dog knelt next to a woman with a long braid among them in the worship service. Its posture as people around were on the same page, front paws planted, head bowed with heads bowed. The picture says, "Life is hard man, even dogs are there for prayer."
That very simple line captured the moment, it suggested that hardship is so universal that even animals who’re usually free from all human worry seemed involved as humans are, wanting to belong to some sense of belonging or comfort.
The picture resonates, on one hand because it combines humor with depth: a dog mimicking prayer. On the other hand, it’s symbolic: a reaffirmation that suffering is not limited to individual beings. Animals are sensitive to feeling that people do and to feel human emotion, and thus this dog had empathy and solidarity.
It also points to resilience. Prayer is frequently a method of getting through issues and the dog’s presence adds a layer of innocence and purity to the act. The very belief, or connection (as ritual or instinct is in our faith) is about something bigger than ourselves to our own people, to other species.
If everything is so chaotic in the world then a small prayer of some sort here, that’s something to enjoy. These things in fact can be a source of comfort where dignity can be found and hope too. So a dog kneeling in prayer isn’t just one viral image and so that people can call upon a bond (and that’s what we need when we are in this world for so many reasons for our common struggle).
The scene teaches that prayer is more than words; it is a posture of the heart. Whether human or animal, it is this whole bowing together that reflects humility and perseverance. Life is tough, but times with close ties (and when God is nearby) remind us not only are the people you are with to keep you all together but the things you know you are alone.
