A tragic industrial accident in Karnataka’s Yadgir district killed three workers and injured two others after a suspected chemical leak at a factory on Tuesday. There are now mounting concerns about workplace safety standards and hazardous material handling in industrial units in the state.
The accident occurred when workers were doing their normal work inside the factory on a day-to-day basis, and there are preliminary reports that a chemical leak could have sent some workers into shock and panic. Emergency response teams were immediately sent to the site after workers notified local authorities about the incident, said police.
Three of the labourers died of exposure to toxic substances, and two others suffered injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, said officials. Medical personnel are closely monitoring the condition of the injured workers and have been trying to determine the chemical involved in the incident, they said.
Police and district administration officials arrived at the factory soon after information on the tragedy was given. That area was sealed off so people wouldn’t be exposed to danger and emergency workers could do rescue and inspection work. It is believed that the incident could have happened in a part of the factory that is used to store or process chemicals. Still, no official conclusions have been drawn.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the deceased labourers since their families had not been notified yet. Postmortem examinations will finally provide more details on the cause of death. Samples from the site have also been taken for analysis to trace the sequence of events that caused the tragedy.
