On October 6, 2026, Delhi witnessed greater political activity as Indian Youth Congress and NSUI workers protested outside Akashvani Bhavan and INDIA bloc MPs marched towards the Election Commission of India demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Delhi Police had a lot more security in place and detained some protesters during the demonstrations as tensions increased.
Youth Congress Workers Detained

India Bloc MPs March towards Election Commission.
The detentions came as India bloc MPs and opposition leaders marched from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters.
The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, after the opposition criticized the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
The march was stopped near the NITI Aayog office, on the stretch between NITI Aayog and Akashvani Bhavan. Opposition MPs then staged a sit-in after being prevented from proceeding towards the Election Commission.
The demonstration featured leaders from several opposition parties -- Congress, Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party among them, reported sources.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi enter Akashvani Bhavan.
The protest took a dramatic turn when Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra entered the Akashvani Bhavan premises after the march was stopped.
Rahul Gandhi earlier climbed a police barricade while protesting the restrictions on the march. Priyanka Gandhi was initially taken towards a detention bus but later joined Rahul Gandhi near the Akashvani Bhavan gate.
The two Congress leaders were later seen sitting inside the premises, while other opposition leaders and supporters continued their protest.

Why are Opposition Parties protesting?
The INDIA bloc has been calling for action against CEC Gyanesh Kumar and has also raised objections to the electoral roll revision process.
Opposition parties have claimed that changes to voter lists could affect eligible voters. The Election Commission and government have denied any wrongdoing and said the revision was made so as not to skew the electoral rolls.
Thus the October 6 protest was only the start of another big fight between the opposition parties and the authorities over the functioning of the Election Commission.
Delhi Police Security Deployment
In central Delhi, security was very high ahead of the march. Delhi Police had imposed prohibitory restrictions in the New Delhi district and there were layers of barricading around key routes leading to the Election Commission headquarters in the vicinity of the headquarters of the Election Commission.
Many opposition leaders were detained during the day’s protest including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Reuters and other reports said.
