Ahmedabad is to host the historic 100th anniversary Commonwealth Games in 2030, the second time India will host the once-in-a-lifetime multi-sport event following the 2010 edition in New Delhi. The flags and baton switch took place at the end of the Glasgow 2026 Games, marking a landmark moment for the Commonwealth Sport Movement. It was attended by Indian Olympic Association President Dr. P.T. Usha, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, and Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi. The choice of host city was unanimous by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly of 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.
The announcement was met with a huge cultural celebration, as Garba dancers and traditional Indian dhol drummers came to the General Assembly Hall to showcase Gujarat's rich history. Dr. Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, gave glowing praise to India’s size, youth, ambition, and cultural dynamism, marking the beginning of a golden age for the movement. In a similar vein, Dr. P.T. Usha has also expressed gratitude for the trust placed in India and said that this centenary edition will go a long way towards building the infrastructure for the next century of international sports cooperation. This was to the delight and satisfaction of the top athletes from Scotland’s Duncan Scott and Indian world champion boxer Jaismine Lamboria, who are going to be present at the event on Indian soil.
The 2030 centenary edition is expected to have between 15 and 17 major sports disciplines and will be organized on the modern surface of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave. Sports program elements that have already been confirmed under the new sports program include Athletics and Para Athletics, Swimming and Para Swimming, Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis, Bowls and Para Bowls, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting, Artistic Gymnastics, Netball, and Boxing. Further sports under consideration are archery, badminton, 3x3 basketball and wheelchair basketball, beach volleyball, T20 cricket, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby sevens, shooting, squash, triathlon, and wrestling, and host cities can propose their own traditional or new sports.
