Indian boxing star Lovlina Borgohain won another Asian Games medal after she stormed into the women’s 75kg semifinals at the Aichi-Nagoya Games on Monday. At the Nishio Gymnasium, her victory was 5-0 against Seong Suyeon in the quarter-finals and she clinched at least a bronze medal and she’s a bronze winner from Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist.
Lovlina dominated Seong during the opening rounds of the 2026 Asian Games making her first appearance at the event. The unanimous decision reflected her dominance, as all three rounds went in her favour. After winning silver in the women’s middleweight category at the Hangzhou edition, she also won her second consecutive Asian Games medal.
The result was something familiar for Lovlina as Seong was an opponent she had faced at the Asian Games and had defeated in the past in the Asian Games. At Hangzhou 2023 Lovlina had beaten the South Korean boxer twice at the same stage but then went on to win the silver medal. She had also defeated Seong at the 2022 Asian Championships and won gold at that same time.
Lovlina Borgohain Books Semifinal Spot
Lovlina’s quarterfinal victory means she will now return to the ring for the semifinal on September 30. Her opponent will be Kazakhstan’s reigning world champion Natalya Bogdanova, who scored a 4-1 split decision over Uzbekistan’s Aziza Zokirova in her quarterfinal.
The semifinal will give Lovlina another chance to move closer to the gold medal. She came to the Aichi-Nagoya Games with a solid record in major international competitions, including her Olympic bronze medal from Tokyo and the silver medal she won at the previous Asian Games.
The Indian boxer was scheduled to begin her Asian Games campaign in the quarterfinals stage and her match against Seong was among India’s key events on 28 September.
India Assured Of Another Boxing Medal
Lovlina’s win also strengthened India’s medal haul in boxing. Her semifinal qualification meant another medal was guaranteed to the Indian delegation which has already taken a medal in the tournament.
Parveen Hooda, Ankush Panghal and Narender Berwal had also secured semifinal places in their quarter-finals on Sunday and thus India has multiple medal guarantees in the boxing competition. Lovlina’s progress therefore took the Indian boxing team’s guaranteed medal count to at least four, according to the tournament report.
For Lovlina, it continues her successful record at the Asian Games. Her silver medal in Hangzhou had already established her as an Asian Games medallist, and she now has another chance to improve on that result in Aichi-Nagoya.
Lovlina Eyes A Place In The Final
After beating the quarterfinal hurdle, Lovlina will now turn her attention to the semi-final against Bogdanova. The Kazakhstan boxer’s 4-1 victory over Zokirova guaranteed that the Indian will meet another top-level opponent at the medal rounds.
Lovlina’s rise also supports the prospect of Indian boxing medal rounds in the 2026 Asian Games. The fact she can win in her first fight 5-0 very easily has been a good start to the competition.
The Indian boxer will now be looking to build on her quarterfinal performance when she meets Bogdanova in the semifinal. A victory there would take Lovlina into the gold-medal match, while a defeat would still give her a bronze medal due to her semifinal performance.
And Lovlina is confident her return to the Asian Games will end with another medal. Her win against Seong Suyeon extended her success against the South Korean and kept alive her hopes of improving her previous Asian Games silver to gold.
