Lovlina Borgohain secured a place in the women’s 75kg boxing final at the Asian Games 2026 to ensure India at least receives a silver medal. The Indian boxer defeated Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova in the semifinal at the Aichi-Nagoya Games and is one victory away from winning the Asian Games gold medal.
That was another great achievement in Borgohain's international career. The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist had already secured a medal after defeating South Korea’s Seong Suyeon in the quarterfinals. She will now be able to change the colour of the medal after winning silver at the last Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023.
Borgohain came into the tournament with extensive international experience. Her latest Asian Games campaign comes shortly after she won a silver medal in the women’s 75kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. She won medals at the World Championships, Asian Championships and World Cup in addition to a bronze from Tokyo.
Lovlina Borgohain’s Road To The Final
Borgohain started her Asian Games campaign with a strong performance in the 75kg quarterfinal. She defeated South Korea’s Seong Suyeon by unanimous 5-0 score and all five judges were in her favour. She had a powerful jab, cross combinations and movement and was able to dominate the bout and secure a place in the semifinals.
The victory against Seong also gave Borgohain a second consecutive Asian Games medal. She won silver in Hangzhou in 2023 and came to the 2026 competition looking to go one step further on the podium.
Another big challenge was Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova, who defeated Uzbekistan’s Aziza Zokirova 4-1 in the quarterfinals. Bogdanova is the reigning world champion in the 70kg category and had reached the final four.
However, Borgohain’s victory in the semifinal was against an opponent with a strong international record, which adds significance to the Indian boxer’s latest result.
Gold Medal Now Within Reach
With the semifinal victory, Borgohain is guaranteed a silver medal and will now have to contend for the top prize in the women's 75kg weight category. A gold medal would help her improve on her silver medal finish in Hangzhou and add another major title to her career.
The Assam-born boxer has publicly said she wants to improve on her results in the last Asian Games. In her quarterfinal win in Aichi-Nagoya, Borgohain said Japan was very special to her because she made her Olympic breakthrough there in Tokyo 2020. She also referred to her silver medal from the previous Asian Games and said she would change its colour this time.
Borgohain’s 2026 campaign is another chapter in her transition to the 75kg category. Her Olympic bronze in Tokyo was in 69kg and since then she has fought at 75kg against opponents with different physical styles and strengths. It has involved adjustments in strength, movement, reach and tactics.
Another Major Medal For Indian Boxing
Borgohain’s success is part of a strong performance by India’s boxing team at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Before her semifinal, many Indian boxers had made it to the last four and won medals.
Parveen Hooda reached the women's 65kg semifinal, Ankush Panghal advanced in the men's 80kg category and Narender Berwal reached the semifinals in the men's +90kg division. Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya also made it to the last four in their respective categories.
Borgohain’s second consecutive Asian Games medal also represents a strong run across multi-sport competitions. Her silver at the Commonwealth Games in 2026 was also just before the Asian Games and her Olympic medal remains one of the defining achievements of her career.
The Indian boxer will now turn her attention to the gold-medal bout. The final will offer Borgohain a chance to fight for the top prize at a major international event after her silver finishes at Hangzhou 2023 and Glasgow 2026.
For now, the 28-year-old has already won a silver medal for India. The final result will determine if she adds an Asian Games gold to her collection. Regardless of what happens, her performance in Aichi-Nagoya is another podium finish at major international competitions and another medal for India in boxing.
