Manush Shah and Diya Chitale won the bronze medal in mixed doubles table tennis at the Asian Games 2026 after their semifinal loss to Chinese Olympic champions Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin 0-4 at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium on Friday.
The Indian pair had a good run to the semifinals but faced one of the best mixed doubles pairs in table tennis. Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin, commonly known as the 'Sha-Tou' pair, are two-time Asian Games champions and they proved too much for the Indian team.
Despite the semifinal loss, Shah and Chitale’s performance earned them a bronze medal and another podium place in table tennis at the Asian Games 2026.
Manush Shah And Diya Chitale reach Semifinal
Shah and Chitale came to the semifinal following a quarterfinal victory against Wong Chun and Doo Ho from Hong Kong. The Indian team beat the four-time world medallists and World No. 4 pair 3-1 to secure a place in the last four.
That victory had raised hopes of a strong performance against the Chinese combination. But Sun and Wang quickly established their authority in the semifinal.
The Indians showed resistance in the first game and were competitive but Sun and Wang eventually won 11-8. In the second game, the Chinese pair stepped up their intensity and won 11-5, taking a 2-0 edge in the match.
Shah and Chitale were down 0-5 in the third game. But the Indian pair managed to get back into the game and put pressure on the defending champions. Their comeback made the game more interesting but Sun and Wang held their composure to win 11-8.
The fourth game was decisive because the Chinese duo took control again. They won 11-2 to complete a 4-0 victory and reach the final, while Shah and Chitale had to settle for the bronze medal.
Second Indian Mixed Doubles Pair To Win Asiad Medal
The bronze medal is an extraordinary accomplishment for Manush Shah and Diya Chitale. They became the second Indian mixed doubles pair to win a medal at the Asian Games after Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra.
Their medal is also proof of the growing presence of table tennis in India at the highest level of national tournaments. A mixed doubles match requires strong strategic coordination between the two players, with quick exchanges and tactical changes being key to success.
Shah and Chitale’s quarterfinal victory against the top-class Hong Kong pair was one of the key moments of their medal-winning campaign. This match-up ended against the champions, but the semifinal ensured India another table tennis medal at the continental event.

India’s table tennis campaign in Nagoya has also included a lot of other competitive matches. In men’s doubles, Harmeet Desai and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran were eliminated in the third round after losing 0-3 to Japan’s Sora Matsushima and Shunsuke Togami.
Yashaswini Ghorpade and Diya Chitale suffered a 0-3 defeat in women's doubles to China's Shuhan Fan and Yi Chen in the third round. Sreeja Akula and Syndrela Das also dropped out at the same stage after losing 0-3 to China's Man Kuai and Manyu Wang.
Manav Thakkar was beaten 2-4 by North Korea's Ryong Tae in the second round in men's singles. Shah also participated in the men's doubles event with Manav, but they lost 1-3 to Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto and Hiroto Shinozuka in the second round.
There was also a positive result in the women's singles competition, with Yashaswini Ghorpade defeating Syria's Hend Zaza 4-1 in their second round.
The mixed doubles bronze is therefore a major boost to India's table tennis team. Shah and Chitale could not make it to the gold medal match, but they were able to make it through the knockout rounds and defeat a top-ranked Hong Kong pair to finish on the podium.
The semifinal defeat also showed the difficulty faced by China’s stars. Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin proved why they have dominated the Asian Games mixed doubles event, but India’s bronze medal is another important achievement for their paddlers at the 2026 Asian Games.
