KL Rahul has been praised by fans across India for his kind gesture towards a stadium staff member after the second ODI between India and New Zealand at Hnry Stadium in Wellington.
The match was about India’s thrilling four-run win via Duckworth Lewis Stern (DLS) method but it was Rahul’s thoughtful act after the game that became one of the most memorable moments of the evening as the Indian wicketkeeper-batter gifted the smartphone he received as part of his Game Changer of the Match award to a female staff member at the stadium leaving her surprised and emotional.
Video of the incident shared by BCCI went viral on social media very soon and cricket fans lauded the batter for being generous and kind.

The incident happened during the post match presentation ceremony which was held indoors as rain had interrupted the game and forced it to be called off early. KL Rahul was adjudged Game Changer of the Match for his role in India’s run chase. He got a smartphone as part of the award but instead of taking it with him he gifted it to a woman working at Hnry Stadium. The staff member was completely taken by surprise when Rahul presented her the phone. It was a beautiful moment that transcended cricket.
Talking about the incident in a video shared by BCCI, the woman said “He just gave me the phone that he won. I am shocked but it was very kind of him to hand over to me. I didn’t expect it.” Her genuine reaction caught the attention of cricket fans who appreciated Rahul for making the stadium staff member’s day special. Fans responded positively to the video with many saying small things can create memorable moments.
Rahul’s gesture became even more special because stadium staff are often the unsung heroes behind international sporting events managing match-day arrangements, helping players and officials and spectators; they help organise major cricket matches.
Players get all the attention for their performances but people working behind the scenes rarely do. Rahul sharing his award with a stadium employee drew attention to them and showed appreciation for their work.
In the second ODI itself India and New Zealand played a nail biting contest. India won by four runs via DLS method to record their second successive win in the five-match ODI series. New Zealand were put into bat after the match was reduced to 47 overs per side and they struggled against India’s disciplined bowling attack as the hosts were bowled out for just 134 runs giving India an opportunity to build on their position in the series.
Indian fast bowlers again impressed with Gurnoor Brar taking four wickets and restricting New Zealand to a low total. He was Player of the Match for his bowling. Anshul Kamboj, Auqib Nabi and Axar Patel also took two wickets each as New Zealand could not build partnerships or accelerate towards a competitive score.
India’s chase, though, wasn’t easy. The visitors lost wickets early on in the innings which put pressure on their middle order. With the target within reach but wickets falling regularly India needed stability from its experienced batters.
Shreyas Iyer chipped in with 30 runs while KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 26 from 38 deliveries. He kept calm and India stayed in control despite difficult conditions.
India eventually got to 113/7 in 26 overs before rain stopped play early. Under DLS India were four runs ahead of the required par score so they won narrowly and with this result India took a 2-0 lead in the five match ODI series against New Zealand.
While Indian team’s win and Gurnoor Brar’s four wicket haul were important highlights of the game KL Rahul’s gesture towards stadium staff member was equally memorable. The way he gifted away his award winning smartphone showed how sporting success can also give people an opportunity to bring happiness to others.
This incident has once again shown why moments of generosity off the cricket field are as memorable as performances on it.
With India preparing for the remaining matches of the series Rahul’s contribution with bat and gesture in Wellington has been appreciated by cricket followers. For the stadium staff member the gift will remain a memorable one, for fans it gave another reason to celebrate Indian cricketer other than his performance on field.
