The washout was a disappointing ending for Hong Kong as they were unable to play against Pakistan on the field. In the event that no result could be achieved due to the weather, the rules of the tournament were followed and Pakistan, the top-ranked side, received the semifinal spot.
Pakistan entered the quarterfinal stage right from a first round bye. The team, led by new captain Sahibzada Farhan, were among the teams who were seeded to begin their Asian Games campaign from the knockout stage. Hong Kong had to come through the group stage, however, to qualify for the quarterfinals.
The two teams have played each other in a number of major Asian cricket competitions in the past including the 2022 Asia Cup and 2023 Asian Games and both of them won both of these games and thus have a good head-to-head record in the two teams heading into this match. The weather has already become a big part of the men’s cricket competition, and now India’s quarter-final date with Afghanistan comes up next. India will also go through their knockouts, but fears over rain could be central to the selection of the semifinalists.
India entered the Asian Games 2026 cricket competition as the No. 1-ranked team in men's T20Is and Afghanistan were lower in the ICC rankings. Under the tournament's rules, if their quarterfinal gets washed out without a result, India will progress because of their higher ranking.
The rain had a similar effect on the previous Asian Games cricket tournament in Hangzhou in 2023. India won men’s gold medal after the final against Afghanistan was washed out. India had a higher seeding, hence the gold medal, and was awarded as their better seeding.
The Pakistan-Hong Kong washout once again demonstrates how weather can play a big role in knockout competitions in the final time of the tournament. While Pakistan goes to the semifinals, Hong Kong leaves the tournament without a chance to participate in the quarterfinal itself.
The focus now turns to the semi-final and gold medal opportunity for Pakistan. But whether the team will be playing against Bangladesh or Malaysia is not yet known. The conclusion of that quarterfinal will decide Pakistan's next step in Asian Games 2026.
The washout also adds another layer of uncertainty to the remaining knockout matches. With rain expected around the India-Afghanistan quarter-final on the way in and the ranking of the tournament and seeding rules may once again be of primary importance to who wins. For the teams still at the tournament, weather-related disruptions could be as important as how much teams perform on the field.
