The historic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, popularly known as Chepauk, could soon honour three of Tamil Nadu’s most prominent cricketers by naming stands after them.
According to a report published on September 29, 2026, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) is planning to name three stands after S Venkataraghavan, Kris Srikkanth and Ravichandran Ashwin. The proposal would honour players from three generations of Tamil Nadu cricket.
But the proposal should be considered a plan rather than a final decision, as the report describes it as in need of official approval.
Who are the three legends?
The three players represent different eras of Indian and Tamil Nadu cricket.
S Venkataraghavan, one of India's best spin bowlers, represented India in 57 Tests and 15 ODIs. He later served as an international umpire and also in various cricket administration and selection roles. He took 156 Test wickets during his international career.
Kris Srikkanth was one of India's attacking opening batters in the 1980s and early 1990s. He played 43 Tests and 146 ODIs for India. His biggest career highlight was in the 1983 World Cup when he was part of the title-winning team of Kapil Dev.
Ravichandran Ashwin, the youngest of the three, has established himself as one of India’s top Test spinners and all-rounders. He finished his Test career with 537 wickets in 106 matches and was also involved in India’s biggest international campaigns.
The proposed naming would bring together three players whose careers span very different periods of Indian cricket.
Venkataraghavan represented India during the 1960s and 1970s, and Srikkanth became a major figure in the 1980s and early 1990s. Ashwin represented India in the modern era and became particularly influential in Test cricket.
The proposal is thus a potential tribute to three generations of Tamil Nadu cricket at one of the country’s most historic cricket venues.
Chepauk already has a history of honouring cricket figures.
The MA Chidambaram Stadium has previously featured tributes to prominent cricket personalities. For this reason, murals of former and current Tamil Nadu players Venkataraghavan, Srikkanth and Ashwin were put up in the venue.
In 2023, a newly constructed pavilion and terrace at Chepauk were named the Kalaignar M Karunanidhi Stand.
The new proposal would take the recognition of the three cricketers a step further if the TNCA plan gets final approval.
