Conor McGregor has a long-term vision for his career, and he is now looking forward to a trilogy match-up against Max Holloway in his final UFC contract. After his brutal match-up with Holloway got cancelled he posted on social media saying it was International Fight Week time for the Irish superstar and he was still planning to go back to the fight in July 2027. Dubbing the fight “The Last Dance” McGregor is going to get revenge and settle the score in what will be one of the most anticipated MMA fights in history.
The rivalry’s third and final fight was at UFC 329 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada where Holloway took a technical knockout victory in 69 seconds. McGregor fought in the welterweight division and immediately rushed forward and threw an early kick, injuring his right knee. The injury immediately left the former two-division champion on the canvas and Holloway took the initiative before the referee called off the match. This was the first time since August 2013 that the two icons fought in their early days in the UFC at the featherweight level and McGregor won by unanimous decision.
The severe nature of the injury requires a lot of medical treatment and McGregor will undergo surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This long period of recovery and rehabilitation is why he has been out of action for a long time now. A short video was released to show the 38-year-old athlete practicing light leg movements but UFC President Dana White said that the fighter is ready to return after about a year.
McGregor fought for the first time since his technical knockout loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021 on July 11. The fight was a return to action for McGregor, who had missed three straight fights and four of his last five fights. Holloway has been working with a grueling schedule that no one else can even dream of; the 34-year-old Hawaiian came back from a unanimous decision loss to Charles Oliveira at UFC 326 in March to fight against McGregor. Looking forward to the future, a 2027 match up gives McGregor a final chapter of his career and can write it out.
