Four-year-old Elena Mishra from Odisha became the youngest female player to enter an official rating from the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
Elena is in FIDE's rating list of September 2026 with a 1432 Blitz rating. She achieved the milestone at an age of just 4 years, 6 months, and 16 days.
Her achievements have attracted the attention of India's chess community as well as Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who personally congratulated her.

Elena was born on February 15, 2022, and has already earned a place on the official international chess rating list. Her FIDE profile lists her as an Indian female player born in 2022.
Her current rating is in Blitz chess, where players have much less time to make their moves than in classical chess.
Elena is the only female player born in 2022 or later to have an official FIDE rating in any format, according to chess reporting.
Achieving this is particularly remarkable for Elena because most children at her age have only just started to learn basic learning and problem-solving skills, and she has already played in a chess tournament.
How did Elena earn a rating?
Elena earned her rating after competing in the Odisha State Blitz FIDE Rating Open Chess Championship 2026.
The tournament was held at Mother's Public School in Bhubaneswar on August 16.
Elena scored 4 points from nine games during the competition. She also beat two opponents who already had FIDE ratings.
Those results helped her enter the official FIDE rating system.
A FIDE rating is used to measure a player's performance based on their results against other rated players. Ratings are maintained separately for different formats, such as classical, rapid, and Blitz chess.
Therefore, Elena's 1432 rating reflects her performance in Blitz games.
With Just Four
Elena is a young woman, so this is very unusual.
At four years old, she is playing against players who are much more experienced. Her participation on the FIDE list means her performances have already been registered in the international chess system.

Elena’s accomplishment comes at a time when Indian chess is still producing players who are world-class.
