FIFA World Cup 2026 looks set to be a monumental finale with Argentina against Spain as the title is played on Sunday, July 19, at the New York New Jersey Stadium. Both football powerhouses will have their eyes on the world’s greatest football trophy, but this year’s final is a storybook one as well.

For the first time in the tournament's 96-year history, FIFA will present the World Cup winners with official championship rings, introducing a brand-new tradition alongside the iconic World Cup trophy and winners' medals.

The move is a significant change in FIFA's long-standing award protocol and reflects the growing influence of championship-ring traditions commonly seen in North American sports such as the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL.

A First for FIFA

Since the first FIFA World Cup in 1930, teams have been awarded with the signature gold trophy and winners' medals. But FIFA has now decided to add another symbol of victory by making championship rings for the 2026 champions.

The rings will be made into long-lasting personal keepsakes for players and coaching staff, commemorating their achievement in lifting football’s biggest prize.

The introduction of championship rings represents one of the most notable ceremonial changes in FIFA history.

Unique design with winning team's identity

According to FIFA's official specifications, the championship rings have a distinctive dual-sided design.

On one side is a detailed engraving of the iconic FIFA World Cup trophy, and the other side is left blank before the final.

Once the tournament ends, FIFA will engrave the name and official crest of the winning nation on the blank surface, making each ring unique to the 2026 champions.

In celebration of the tournament year, FIFA has commissioned 2,026 limited-edition rings.

Only 30 rings have been reserved exclusively for the winning squad and coaching staff.

The remaining 1,996 rings will be released as limited-edition collectibles for football fans around the world to own a commemorative piece of FIFA World Cup history.

Temporary rings during the Trophy Ceremony

Because the winning team's identity will only be known after the final whistle, the permanent rings cannot be completed before match day.

As a result, FIFA has established a special presentation protocol.

After the final, the winning team’s captain and head coach will have temporary ceremonial rings during the on-field trophy presentation.

The official championship rings will then be engraved and custom-sized for each player and member of the coaching staff before being presented at a separate ceremony in the weeks after the tournament.

Argentina chasing back-to-back World Cup titles

Argentina will go into the final looking to defend the World Cup title after another successful campaign.

The South American giants secured their place in the final by a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in the semi-finals, ending England’s hopes of winning a first World Cup since 1966.

Lionel Messi has led Argentina again in this title. The veteran superstar has delivered a great tournament so far with eight goals and four assists and is very likely to land a Golden Boot and Golden Ball medal.

A win on Sunday will hand Argentina consecutive FIFA World Cup titles and cement this generation's position as one of the greatest teams in football history.

Spain Aim for Second World Cup Crown

For Argentina to do this, it will have to face an outstanding Spanish side that has been very good throughout the tournament.

Spain took a place in the final after beating tournament favourite France 2-0 in a dominant semi-final performance.

Their attacking football has caught the eye, but it is Spain’s defensive strength that has been even more impressive. They only conceded one goal in the entire tournament and are one of the most balanced teams in the competition.

The final will therefore be a fascinating one between Argentina’s attacking brilliance and the disciplined defensive structure of Spain.

History Awaits in New Jersey

With the FIFA World Cup trophy on the line and championship rings bringing another special dimension to Sunday’s final, it’s sure to be one of the most memorable moments of the year.

Whether Argentina wins a title or Spain wins the title for the second time, the winning players will leave New York New Jersey Stadium with a lot more than medals and memories: They will also become the first footballers to have official FIFA World Cup championship rings, adding a unique chapter to the tournament’s rich 96-year legacy.
