Gabriel Tardio isn’t taking long to celebrate his latest triumph. Days after winning the men’s doubles at USA National Pickleball Championships in Cary, North Carolina, the rising pickleball star is already planning a fresh challenge thousands of miles away in Kuala Lumpur.
Tardio just won the national title with his regular men’s doubles partner Ben Johns. Another important moment in his career but celebrations are short lived because international pickleball calendar is getting tougher and tighter all the time so Tardio has already moved on to his next tournament.
Malaysia this time — the Kuala Lumpur Cup will bring top players from all over the world together. It’s a tournament with ranking points attached and has become one of the more important stops on the Asian pickleball calendar.
But Tardio’s appearance in Kuala Lumpur has an interesting twist to it. He will not play with his regular partner Ben Johns, but Noe Khlif.
The pairing has been interesting because Tardio and Khlif don’t have a history as doubles partners. In fact they were playing against each other only weeks ago in another tournament in New York — Khlif won that match but at Kuala Lumpur Cup the two players will team up again.
Chemistry is often one of the most important things for any doubles partnership. Players need to know each other’s strengths, anticipate movements and trust each other during key points. Established teams tend to have experience and familiarity but Tardio and Khlif will have to learn that quickly.
The challenge will be even greater for Tardio, who has settled into a partnership with Ben Johns. Athletes play more often with the same partner over time and develop roles and strategies. Familiarity becomes a huge advantage when matches get heated.

This international mix is becoming one of the most interesting things happening in professional pickleball. In years past tournaments in different regions could feel like they were on separate tracks — players were mostly playing their domestic or continental circuit.
That is beginning to change. More players are now travelling across continents to compete for ranking points, titles and opportunities against different styles of competition. Movement between American and Asian tournaments is helping create a more connected global calendar.

Whether Gabriel Tardio and Noe Khlif can find chemistry to challenge for the title is another question. They are new together so they won’t have much time to get into a rhythm.
