India won the toss and elected to bowl first. It was a good decision as India’s bowlers troubled New Zealand batters all over the park. Hosts failed to build partnerships and lost wickets at regular intervals.

Gurnoor Brar Leads India's Bowling Attack

Brar was India’s best bowler with 4 wickets for 30 runs from his 10 overs.

The right arm pacer kept the pressure on with disciplined bowling and made important breakthroughs when New Zealand tried to rebuild their innings.

Brar’s performance continued his good start to the ODI series. He had taken three wickets in the opening match against New Zealand as well so was one of India’s main bowlers.

His four wicket haul in Wellington strengthened India’s bowling further and restricted the home side to a modest total.

Daryl Mitchell Fights Back for New Zealand

Daryl Mitchell though was able to offer some resistance against the regular wickets losses for New Zealand.

The veteran batter made 55 runs and became the leading run-scorer for his team but he had little support from the other batters as India’s bowlers kept on dominating.

New Zealand struggled to find partnerships and India were able to control the innings.

The middle and lower order were unable to contribute runs which cost the hosts dearly.

India's Bowlers Dominate at Wellington

India’s decision to bowl first paid off as the bowling unit came together to stop New Zealand from building a competitive total.

The Indian attack kept the pressure on with regular wickets and bowling spells. Brar was particularly important in restricting New Zealand batting line-up.

New Zealand eventually lost all 10 wickets for 134 in 41 overs and India needed 135 to win the second ODI.

India Look to Strengthen Series Lead

India went into the second ODI with confidence as they had won the first game of the five-match series by five wickets (DLS method).

Virat Kohli’s 74-run knock was instrumental in India winning the first match in Auckland.

With New Zealand able to score only 134 runs in the second game, India had a chance to improve their position in the series.

The Indian batting line-up of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill would have been expected to approach the chase with confidence.

Brar’s four-wicket haul has given India a strong chance to carry on winning against New Zealand. It is now up to India’s batting response to complete the chase and move closer to another series win.
