Norway’s long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup knockout stage ended in unforgettable fashion as Erling Haaland scored a late winner to give the Scandinavian nation a 2-1 win against Ivory Coast in Group A and take it to the Round of 16, where Brazil now awaits.
It was Norway’s first World Cup knockout match in 28 years, and the atmosphere was exactly the kind of drama fans had hoped for. Ivory Coast had another disciplined defensive display and pushed the contest to its limits but Norway’s attacking quality was the deciding factor in the closing stages.
Norway's opening half was much tighter than many had expected. Norway went into the match as one of the most attacking sides in the tournament with 45 goals in qualifying and the group stage. But Ivory Coast, who had not conceded a single goal in the qualification, frustrated Ståle Solbakken and his side with a structured defensive structure that kept Haaland quiet for much of the first half.
The breakthrough finally happened in the 37th minute and it was worth the wait.
Antonio Nusa was found by Martin Odegaard on the right wing and the young forward had an individual moment. As he flew past Nicolas Pepe, Nusa opened up his body and curled a powerful shot beyond goalkeeper Yahia Fofana and into the far corner. It was a goal that gave his confidence and technical strength a huge boost and Norway had a 1-0 lead going into half time.
Ivory Coast refused to fade away after the restart.
Manager Emerse Faé urged his side on and the African nation responded with more attacking intent. Norway had to defend deeper than expected as the pressure was only growing. The equaliser finally came in the 74th minute through Amad Diallo who showed his speed and poise by plowing past David Møller Wolfe and Sander Berge and clinically beating goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.
The stunning strike was so dramatic that the momentum changed with Ivory Coast in the best position to win as extra time approached.
But when Norway needed their biggest star the most, Erling Haaland delivered once again.
Oscar Bobb split Ivory Coast's defence with an incisive pass to Patrick Berg who calmly squared the ball into the penalty area. Haaland timed his run perfectly before guiding the ball past Fofana to restore Norway's lead in the closing moments of the match.
The goal sent Norwegian players and supporters into wild celebrations while ending Ivory Coast’s brave resistance.
While Haaland was the ultimate winner, Norway’s success was also due to Antonio Nusa’s imagination, Odegaard’s leadership and the team’s toughness under pressure. Their ability to withstand Ivory Coast’s second half surge before making one decisive attacking move illustrated why they are still among the tournament’s most dangerous teams.
Ivory Coast’s defeat was a very bad end to a great campaign. Their resolute defending and comeback showed a team capable of competing with the world’s greatest, but one lapse in concentration against a striker of Haaland’s quality was a costly one.
Norway now faces its toughest challenge yet as it prepares for a mouthwatering Round of 16 clash against five-time world champions Brazil. Haaland is clinical and exciting talents like Antonio Nusa and Martin Odegaard bring creativity, Norway will believe it has the firepower to trouble one of football’s biggest giants.
If this dramatic victory is any indication, the Scandinavian side is far from finished at the FIFA World Cup.
