Israel Flag Controversy Sparks Racism Row After Argentina's Dramatic World Cup Win Over Egypt

Argentina's game-changer comeback win against Egypt in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 was just as much a storybook moment of an Argentine comeback and what was the explosive reaction by Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan. The Egyptian manager attacked the match officials and claimed that outside factors led Argentina to the quarter-finals and a heated exchange between him and Messi near the touchline has gone viral on social media.

According to the world champions, they appeared to be heading for a shock elimination when Egypt took a 2-0 lead. Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko left Argentina with a mountain to climb while Messi had had a frustrating evening earlier in the first half after he missed a penalty.

Argentina made a remarkable turnaround in 11 minutes of normal time left. Cristian Romero in the 79th minute gave hope to the team with a goal for the goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir. Messi got level with a powerful strike that beat goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir after clipping the underside of the crossbar four minutes later.

And with extra time on the way, Enzo Fernandez completed one of the greatest comebacks in World Cup history by scoring the winning goal in stoppage time to win 3-2 and make Argentina qualify for the quarter-finals.

The emotional finish was a great thing for the touchline. Cameras captured the tense scene between Hossam Hassan and Messi in the final stages of the match. The confrontation erupted in front of an audience and live video of the incident spread onto social media sites in a hurry.

But the tension wasn’t over when the final whistle came. Videos circulating on the internet purported to show Argentina supporters waving Israeli flags in the direction of the Egypt bench following the match. Hassan had a Palestinian flag on his shoulder as he walked down the touchline, which went viral online. It was a combustible moment that created a new layer of controversy to a game that was already raw.

What really got the touchline collision even more talked about was Hassan making FIFA's anti-racism gesture within seconds of his confrontation with Messi, leaving the Argentina captain visibly puzzled before match officials intervened to control the situation. A number of Argentine players also rushed over to escort their captain away as tempers threatened to boil over.

Following the final whistle, Hassan expressed his anger in a passionate post-match press conference, claiming Egypt should have been able to win and the officials were to blame for denying his team a historic victory.

"Argentina’s victory is entirely undeserved. I promise you, when I return today, I will not watch football in this World Cup at all, because there is no justice in it. My personal protest is that I will not watch this World Cup again. When I return home and back to our country, I am not watching it," Hassan said.

The Egypt coach rejected the idea that his team should simply accept defeat and said they had performed with honour and did so in the end they had done honourably despite the defeat, he said.

"We had the right to win, and I don’t want to say ‘hard luck’ to us. We left with honour, honour on our part. But the final result, apart from being highly influenced, is far from the 'fair play' that FIFA talks about and far from respect. There was neither respect nor fair play today," he added.

However, Hassan also suggested that forces beyond the football pitch might have influenced the outcome and if Argentina had been supported because they were the defending champions and because Messi is still one of the biggest attractions in world football.

"We looked better than the reigning champions, better in every way, but the result was influenced by internal factors on the pitch and external factors off it," he said.

"Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champions in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running. There are other factors in football beyond the technical ones. The world champions got support at every level."

The comments came after some of the most controversial moments in a match that has been filled with controversial decisions like Egypt having a goal ruled out by VAR review, as well as several controversial refereeing decisions that frustrated the African side. That has led to speculation among fans and football experts that key decisions have already caused much debate from fans and football experts to arise, as some say that key decisions were made in the final game of the group stage which were clearly in Argentina’s case.

Argentina will go into a quarter-final with new confidence going into the game and new hope now as Lionel Scaloni’s side are about to go into a quarter-final where they are going to face one of the toughest tests of their title defence.

For Egypt, the pain of elimination has been compounded by lingering questions over the officiating. Hossam Hassan and several Egyptian players openly criticising the officials after the match, the damage will definitely continue long after the final whistle of this Round of 16 match is done.
