India made a historic return to the AFC U20 Asian Cup main tournament after 20 years as they won 3-0 over Bangladesh in their final Group B match at the Do’stlik Stadium in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Sunday.
The Blue Colts played with a composed and dominant performance when it counted most, and Danny Meitei Laishram, Vishal Yadav, and substitute Md Arbash scored. The victory meant India ended their qualifying campaign with six points in three games and secured their place in the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027.
India’s qualification is an outstanding achievement for the country’s youth football program. After not featuring in the continental tournament in over two decades, the young Indian side was able to push Bangladesh to the brink of defeat in such a crucial match.
The win put India second in the final Group B rankings. Uzbekistan finished at the top of the group with nine points after defeating Syria. Syria ended third with three points and Bangladesh fourth after losing all three of their games.

Despite having finished second in the group, India qualified for the main tournament and ended up as one of the seven best runners-up among the eight qualifying groups. The AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 is set for March 12 to April 10, 2027, and will offer young players a chance to compete with some of Asia’s biggest football players.
It was high stakes for India and Bangladesh when they walked on the pitch, but the beginning of the match didn’t happen that way. Not even the top teams can really control the match fully while they try to settle in.
But India made the breakthrough in the 25th minute through Danny Meitei Laishram. The goal came because of coordinated pressing and fast attacking football. Danny put Bangladesh defender Md Abdul Riyad Fahim under pressure and forced him to lose possession.
Hateem Ali made sure to capitalize on the error, and he had great awareness in the attacking area. He beat two defenders to send the ball in the direction of the unmarked Danny in the penalty area, and he finished with his side at a 1-0 lead.
India was more confident, and the Blue Colts gradually started to control the match. They remained in possession well and tried to make use of their numerical superiority to extend their advantage.
Danny almost scored his second goal in the 34th minute when his looping free-kick dipped dangerously towards the Bangladesh goal. But goalkeeper Raj Chowdhury remained alert and made an important save to prevent India from doubling their lead before half-time.
India had a positive approach after the break and kept pressing the Bangladesh defense. Their persistence was rewarded in the 60th minute when Vishal Yadav produced one of the best moments of the match.
A long throw into the penalty area was flicked on by Rishikanta towards Vishal. The forward reacted well and produced an acrobatic finish that beat Chowdhury, giving India a comfortable two-goal advantage.
Bangladesh tried to respond after going 2-0 down and began playing with more urgency and aggression. But India kept their defensive mindset and absorbed pressure well. The Blue Colts were organized, and their opponents didn’t have any clear path back into the game.
India head coach Mahesh Gawali made changes in the 72nd minute with Md Arbash and Prashan Jajo replacing goalscorers Danny and Vishal. The substitutions proved very effective.
Just seven minutes later, Arbash ended the match with India’s third goal. Yaipharemba Chingakham started the attack, and a series of quick passes opened up the Bangladesh defense. Arbash completed the move with a powerful left-footed strike into the roof of the net that made it 3-0.
The final stages of the match were managed by India comfortably. Gawali brought Aniket Yadav, Omang Dodum, and Daniyal Makakmayum in as the Blue Colts maintained control and secured a victory.
The result is an amazing moment in Indian youth football. Qualifying for the AFC U20 Asian Cup after 20 years gives this generation a major platform to demonstrate their abilities on the continental stage.
The AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 will also be crucial, as the top four teams in the tournament will qualify for the FIFA U20 World Cup 2027. India will now battle against some of the world’s best young teams in Asia and continue their development.
For Mahesh Gawali and his young team, the 3-0 win against Bangladesh was more than just a win. It was the end of a two-decade wait for India’s U20 football team and the beginning of a new chapter.
