The high-voltage incident between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has sparked new controversy in the IPL 2026 season.
Now calling this a “South Derby”, which started an argument after CSK submitted a formal complaint to the Board of Control for Cricket in India over the allegedly inappropriate conduct of the stadium DJ. What Caused the Controversy? This starts with the issue surrounding the April 5 match in Bengaluru.
CSK said the stadium DJ played a viral ‘dosa, idli, sambar, chutney’ song repeatedly as CSK players were dismissed or while entertaining the crowd. Common on social media memes, the song has sometimes been seen as a satire on South Indian identity, particularly Tamil culture.
CSK management said the repeated use of the song in those situations had gone a step beyond entertainment to disrespect. Those actions damage the spirit of the game and could also be harmful to players as well as fans, the franchise has said. CSK’s Official Complaint. According to reports, Kasi Viswanathan, CSK Managing Director, made quite a few complaints against the BCCI:
- Abuse of Players and Fans: The song is described as being mocking and it seems to have affected the feelings in both players and spectators that CSK has.
- Offensive Remarks: The DJ is also said to have made offensive comments over mic while CSK players were walking back to the pavilion.
- Sportsmanship Violation: CSK insists that supporting the home team is fine, but it shouldn't involve attacking an opponent.
A Continuation of historical tensions?
The problem is, that argument is not a new one. Jitesh Sharma’s singing of a comparable song went viral in IPL 2025 and drew comments online for his video. In response to this, the DJ of Chepauk, who was on Chennai’s home turf at one point, reportedly tried to counter in a match, to which the CSK administration intervened.
A similar incident was brought back at Bengaluru and has increased the level of confrontation between the two teams, injecting a cultural dimension into an already bitter sports rivalry.
BCCI’s Likely Action
It has taken the complaint to its attention, and is expected to take it seriously. IPL ruling authority may create more stringent rules in terms of in-stadium entertainment in order for materials to be respectful and inclusive of. The regulations help preclude any sort of regional, cultural or linguistic ridicule under the banner of fan engagement.
The Bigger Picture
The IPL is a vibrant, animated place characterised by a fervent fan base and competitive rivalry. But they are a reminder that the line between enthusiastic support and disrespect is often a very thin one. Both cricket scholars and the audience know that DJs and fan involvement are core to match day events from the beginning, and that they should not be at the expense of sporting and mutual respect. Now, the league is facing how the BCCI is going to behave, if new policies are in the works, the whole gaze will turn now. And the aim during this period is to hold on to the spirit of cricket on and off the pitch of a season.
