Jasprit Bumrah and three other Indian players will perform match simulations as part of their fitness assessment ahead of India’s upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan. Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy are expected to take part in practice matches arranged by the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) between September 4 and September 9.
The match simulations will play an important role in determining if the players are fully prepared to return to international cricket. All four players have been unable to work out for India so far due to injuries and the BCCI medical team will now check their fitness through competitive practice games.
Bumrah has been included in India’s T20I squad for the Afghanistan series but his participation is still subject to fitness approval. The Indian fast bowler is one of the most important members of the national team and management will want to watch closely at his workload before he returns to competitive activity.
According to the Times of India, BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Delhi is optimistic about the availability of all four players for the Afghanistan series. The three-match T20I series starts on September 13 in New Delhi.
According to a BCCI source, the medical team had shared an update with the selectors that the four players were clinically fit. But players had to show their fitness through practice or through match preparation and further assessment in a match atmosphere.
The Centre of Excellence has arranged the matches between September 4 and September 9 to evaluate the players. They will have to decide if they are physically capable of playing cricket when away from international action.
Apart from Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy will also be closely watched during the simulations. Each player plays a major role in India’s plan, and their return can enhance the team significantly ahead of future international duty.
Recent injury problems in Indian cricket have raised questions regarding the Centre of Excellence at BCCI. In the past few years, India has seen the team have to play without many first-choice players due to injuries, leading to discussions about players’ workload and the international cricket calendar.
After a review meeting in Mumbai, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board was concerned about injuries and workload. The board will consider the packed cricket calendar on which tours and schedules will be based for future tours.
One of the key areas of focus would be making sure players have enough rest and acclimatisation time during tough overseas tours. The BCCI is reportedly looking at how to improve the Future Tours Programme so that players have more time to recover and prepare for important international assignments.
For Bumrah, the upcoming assessment is important. The pace spearhead has a history of workload management because of the physical demands placed on fast bowlers. India is likely to be cautious with his fitness, especially considering the importance of his role across formats.
Prince Yadav, who made his India debut earlier this year, has been identified as a backup option for Bumrah. Having an additional pace option could give the selectors flexibility if Bumrah requires more time to regain full match fitness.
Bumrah is expected to play a red-ball match before his Test return.
Bumrah’s preparation is not limited to the Afghanistan T20I series. The Indian team management is also reportedly considering a red-ball match for the fast bowler before his expected Test comeback later this year.
It has been nearly a year since Bumrah last played in a red-ball match. So, the management wants him to have match practice and prove that his body can handle the workload required in longer-format cricket.
India is going to tour New Zealand later this year, and Bumrah’s return as a Test player could be a big part of the team’s plans. But his participation will depend on his fitness and performance at the time of practice games.
The September 4-9 match simulations will therefore be closely watched by selectors, coaches and medical staff. If Bumrah and the other three players successfully complete the assessment, India could receive a major fitness boost ahead of the Afghanistan T20I series beginning on September 13.
With so many international commitments ahead, the BCCI and team management would be likely to focus on player fitness and workload management. The upcoming match simulations may give a clearer picture of Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar and Nitish Reddy as India gears up for another busy period of international cricket.
