The project is a part of the government’s overall plan for developing sports facilities in Karnataka and training, rehabilitation and competition facilities to offer athletes world-class facilities.

A Landmark Project for Karnataka

Speaking at the Bengaluru Physiotherapists Network (BPN) Colloquium 2026 at ITC Gardenia in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara said the state is committed to developing sports infrastructure and athlete welfare.

He said the government wants a world where athletes get modern facilities, scientific training and comprehensive healthcare comparable to international standards.

As Deputy Chief Minister, upgrading Kanteerava Stadium is in fact a step towards the establishment of Karnataka as one of the leading sports destinations in India.

Vision for an International Sports Hub

The redevelopment plan is to transform the existing stadium into a modern sports facility with state-of-the-art facilities for athletes, coaches and fans.

The project is expected to include:

  • International-standard competition venues
  • Modern training and coaching facilities.
  • Advanced sports science and performance laboratories.
  • Rehabilitation and physiotherapy centres.
  • Fitness and recovery units.
  • Better spectator facilities.

Smart infrastructure based on modern digital technologies:

The upgraded complex would also make it possible for Bengaluru to host national and international sporting events in all disciplines.

Importance of Sports Medicine

Dr. Parameshwara stressed that physiotherapy and preventive care are both required in modern sports.

He said that today’s athletes need not only good coaching but also specialist medical assistance, medical treatment, prevention and rehabilitation services, to be able to perform better and pursue their sporting career.

The government will use these services in future sports infrastructure projects in the state.

Boost for Athletes and Sports Ecosystem

If implemented as it is proposed, the redevelopment will have major benefits for the sporting side of Karnataka.

Young athletes would have access to world-class facilities and not have to travel overseas for training. Coaches, sports scientists and physiotherapists would also benefit from a modern integrated sports ecosystem that would promote elite performance.

The project will also create employment during construction and operation and enhance Bengaluru's status as a sports, education and innovation hub.

Awaiting Detailed Project Plans

Although the government has described its ambitious redevelopment plan, the project reports, timelines and implementation plans have yet to be officially unveiled.

When the new Kanteerava Stadium is complete, it could be one of India’s top sports complexes and be of use to Karnataka's aspiration to develop sports infrastructure and athletes.
