Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are starting to see a new chapter after dismissing their head coach Stephen Fleming after the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). At the moment CSK is on the hunt for a new head coach and one of the first players to take part in the IPL has already ruled out a return. Kepler Wessels, who was CSK's head coach for the 2008 final season, has stated that he won't return to the team at all.
Wessels was CSK’s head coach at the time of the first IPL in 2008. Under his direction, the team reached the final and went up against Rajasthan Royals. CSK missed out on the IPL title in the first season but Wessels’ performance is also an integral part of the IPL history of the franchise.
The 69-year-old former cricketer recently spoke to Sports Now about the possibility of returning to CSK after Fleming’s departure. Wessels said he enjoyed his time with the Chennai-based team but he ruled out a comeback, saying career priorities have changed.
“I enjoyed my time with CSK, but those days are over, so no interest from my side. Happy with my match refereeing career here in Australia and running my boxing and fitness business,” Wessels said at Sports Now.
Wessels Has Moved On From IPL Coaching
Wessels’ comments put an end to speculation about a possible return to the CSK dugout. His current career is based on match refereeing in Australia and he also runs Fortitude Boxing, a boxing and fitness club in Brisbane.
His work as a match referee has kept him on the field of professional cricket even after retirement as a player and the departure from full-time coaching. Wessels was also part of the 2024-25 Big Bash League where he was the referee in the final.
In CSK, Wessels’ decision means the franchise will have to look elsewhere as it searches for a replacement for Fleming. The New Zealand great had been associated with the franchise for almost two decades so his departure would be a major change in CSK’s coaching structure.
Wessels’ One-Year CSK Stint
Wessels’ association with CSK dates back to the first IPL season in 2008. He was appointed the first head coach of the franchise, and led the team to the final in the first season.
However, he did not take over the role the following season. Stephen Fleming took the coaching post. Fleming had been part of CSK's first team as a player and moved into coaching after finishing his playing career.
The change in the CSK coaching setup at the time surprised some fans, especially since Wessels had had a successful debut season as coach. But Wessels had said he was to only work at CSK for one year.
Fleming eventually became one of the longest serving coaches in IPL history with the same franchise. He was also associated with CSK and former India captain Dhoni as well as the team’s backroom structure.
Wessels’ Remarkable International Career
Wessels’ cricket career was unusual in that he represented two countries at international level. He was born in South Africa and made his first international appearance for Australia in 1982. He played for Australia for three years before retiring from international cricket in 1985.
Several years later, Wessels returned to international cricket after South Africa had returned to the international scene after the end of apartheid. He was South Africa's first captain and led the team at the 1992 World Cup.
South Africa reached the semi-final of that tournament, where their campaign ended in dramatic circumstances after rain and a controversial rain-rule calculation affected their chase against England.
Wessels continued playing international cricket for South Africa until 1994. He finally retired from professional cricket in 1999, at the age of 42. He was still involved with the sport through coaching and commentary once he retired.
From Cricket to Match Refereeing And Fitness
Wessels has continued to pursue other interests since retiring from cricket. Aside from coaching and commentary, he also played lawn bowls and was a runner-up at the South African National Championships.
There is also another connection with professional cricket in his role as a match referee. At the same time, his boxing and fitness business in Brisbane shows his involvement in the sporting world outside of cricket.
For CSK, however, the search for a new head coach continues. This time around Wessels has already said he doesn't want to return to the IPL and the team will have to find another coach for the team after Fleming’s long reign.
Wessels’ brief but memorable association with CSK will remain in the franchise’s history, particularly since he led the team to the final in its first IPL season. But as CSK enters a new coaching era, Wessels has made his position clear: his days in the IPL dugout are over.
