Banerji’s medal-winning performance is another step forward in Indian powerlifting on the international stage. In the very competitive field, she produced strong lifts in the squat and bench press disciplines to get on the podium. But what has made her better in the last year is what she’s accomplished.

The young athlete did a 90kg squat and a 50kg bench press, bringing her total to 140kg. This was an excellent performance at her age and body weight, and Banerji lifted almost three times her body weight in her successful attempts.

France's Ines Herbaux won the gold medal in the category with a total lift of 165kg. Ireland's Blathnaid O’Dwyer took the bronze medal with a total of 140kg. Despite also producing the same total as Banerji, O’Dwyer placed behind the Indian athlete and Banerji took the silver medal.

The result underlined the close competition in the junior 47kg category where even a tiny difference in individual performances and competition rank can determine the final medal positions. Banerji held her nerve against strong international competition and emerged with a significant achievement for India.

Great Progress in the Past Year

Banerji’s recent performance is a sign of the continuous progress she’s made in the last few months. In 2025 she lifted 127.5kg and this year she lifted 140kg at the World Championships which is a big deal and it shows the progress she has made in training and competition.

As a young athlete still in her career, the increase in the lifting total is a great sign. Powerlifting requires the combination of strength, technical ability, discipline, and consistency. To even get better at the international level, you have to compete against people who are always working to get better and better.

Banerji’s silver medal might give her even more confidence when she enters the sport. At only 21, we have a long time for her to develop her strength and to gain more experience at big international events.

Her performance in South Africa also gives hope for Indian powerlifting, which continues to produce athletes capable of competing at the global level. International medals can help bring greater attention to the sport and inspire more young athletes to explore competitive powerlifting.

A Promising Future for the Indian Powerlifter

Banerji will have won a medal at the IPF World Championships. The competition brings powerlifters from different countries together and the athletes are able to test themselves against international standards.

Banerji will now look forward to her performance and continue to raise her lifting output. From 127.5kg in 2025 to 140kg at the World Championships, she is clearly on the right track.

The Indian athlete would be hoping for the silver medal to be the first of many international accomplishments. Continued training, participation in big events, and exposure to high-level competition might also develop her into a more competitive athlete in the future.

Joshua Ngoka Delivers a Record-Breaking Performance

The World Championships also witnessed a very impressive performance in the men's 120kg category with Joshua Ngoka winning the gold medal. Ngoka impressed the crowd with a spectacular display and completed all his attempts during the competition.

He got 9-for-9 marks and he did every lift he attempted. That kind of consistency is really important for powerlifting; one little mistake can drastically affect an athlete’s final position.

Ngoka achieved a total of 980.5kg and also set an IPF Junior World Record in South Africa. He was instantly cheered by the crowd and was one of the biggest highlights of the competition.

India Celebrates Another International Sporting Achievement

Keyaa Banerji’s silver medal represents another proud moment in international sports for India. Cricket and other very popular sports often receive more coverage, but powerlifting athletes are still very much a part of the country’s success.

Banerji’s achievement is particularly inspiring because of her young age. Her progress over the past year shows us the importance of consistent training and determination to succeed at the international level.

As she gears up for the next big competitions, Banerji will continue to develop strength and lifting totals. And having a World Championship silver medal now as part of her sporting CV, the 21-year-old powerlifter is a name to watch.
