Kylian Mbappe Creates World Cup History as France Reach Semi-Finals
France went to the World Cup 2026 semi-finals with a 2-0 victory over Morocco, but the night belonged to the captain, Kylian Mbappe, who, as he did so many times before this season, etched his name in football history.
The 27-year-old scored his eighth goal of the tournament to become the first player in FIFA World Cup history to score 20 goals before the age of 30. Mbappe also joined Lionel Messi at the top of the Golden Boot list with eight goals, in a remarkable campaign on football’s biggest stage.
France will now face either Spain or Belgium in the semi-finals as Didier Deschamps' side continues its pursuit of a second World Cup title in three tournaments.
Mbappe Creates Another World Cup Record
Mbappe’s historic moment came in the 60th minute after France had dominated much of the contest without finding the breakthrough.
Earlier in the game, the France skipper had the chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot after a controversial spot-kick after a challenge from Noussair Mazraoui. Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou guessed right and made a wonderful save to deny him.
The missed penalty did little to affect Mbappe's confidence.
In just after the hour mark he received the ball outside the penalty area before curling a fine right-footed effort into the far corner, finally beating Bounou and bringing France the lead.
The goal had great significance.
It was Mbappe's 20th career World Cup goal and only the second player in history after Lionel Messi (21) to achieve the 20 goal mark. More impressively, the France captain was the first footballer ever to achieve the feat before the age of 30 and cemented his place among the greatest World Cup players of all time.
Mbappe wasn’t finished there. Six minutes later he showed his creative side by providing a perfectly weighted assist for France’s second goal.
His evening ended in the 76th minute when Didier Deschamps replaced him after the forward appeared to feel discomfort in his ankle. Mbappe was seen walking comfortably after the match, giving France hope that he will be available for the semi-finals.
Dembele Continues His Ballon d'Or-Winning Form
While Mbappe had another historic record-breaking game, Ousmane Dembele once again showed why he is one of the top players in the world.
Just after winning the Ballon d’Or after a great season where he took Paris Saint-Germain to the UEFA Champions League title, Dembele continued playing well on the international stage.
The French winger scored his fifth goal of the World Cup when he calmly converted Mbappe's pass in the 66th minute, putting the result beyond Morocco’s reach.
Dembele is now France's second-highest goal contributor at the tournament, consistently providing goals and assists alongside Mbappe as Les Bleus try to win another World Cup title.
In the rest of the match, Dembele said he continues to gain confidence with every game.
"Good, I feel very good. This is a position I know with France, with Paris Saint-Germain. I’m building momentum during the competition and I’m very happy with my performance, even though I could be a little better. But it’s the team, that’s what matters. We’re going to do more, we were and we’re going to do it with it."
And his performance in the last game only confirmed why many consider 2026 to be the best year of his career. After winning Europe with PSG and being named the world’s best player with the Ballon d’Or, Dembele is now playing a crucial role in France’s bid to win another World Cup trophy.
With Mbappe chasing history and Dembele continuing the form that earned him football’s highest individual honour, France will go into the semi-finals with perhaps the most dangerous attacking duo left in the tournament.
