Liverpool advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield on 15 September 2026. Both sides made a number of changes to their starting line-up but the game was all about Liverpool and they won it at the end.
Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai secured the victory. Tottenham's only goal came from Conor Gallagher, who briefly gave the visitors hope of a comeback.
Mamardashvili Denies Spurs Early
Tottenham had an opportunity to take the lead in the opening stages. Lucas Bergvall found himself in a promising position but his close-range effort was stopped by Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
That save was important, because Liverpool soon took advantage of their own opportunity. In the 21st minute Mac Allister struck a fine curling finish to put the hosts ahead.
Tottenham also had another chance before half-time when Mohammed Kudus failed to find the target after good work from Destiny Udogie.
Gakpo Doubles Liverpool's Lead
Liverpool increased their lead nine minutes after the restart. Cody Gakpo finished off a good attacking move in the 54th minute with Liverpool leading 2-0.
The goal put Tottenham under significant pressure, but Spurs continued to create chances. Liverpool's advantage meant that Tottenham needed to score quickly to keep the tie alive.
Gallagher Gives Spurs Hope
Tottenham finally found the net in the 69th minute when Conor Gallagher headed home from close range. The goal was significant because it ended Tottenham’s wait for a goal against top-flight opposition during their difficult start to the campaign.
As a result of Gallagher's goal Spurs pressed hard for an equaliser. Their best chance came late on in the game when Omar Marmoush tried to get one over Mamardashvili but the Liverpool goalkeeper was excellent, making a crucial fingertip save in the 86th minute.

Szoboszlai Seals the Victory
Liverpool eventually put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time. Dominik Szoboszlai produced a stunning long-range strike in the 91st minute, leaving Tottenham goalkeeper Martin Dubravka with little chance.
The goal completed an event-filled evening for Liverpool which ensured that Tottenham’s late pressure did not lead to extra time.
Important Moments From the Match
The key moments included Bergvall’s early chance being denied by Mamardashvili, Mac Allister’s 21st-minute opener, Gakpo’s second goal, Gallagher’s response and Mamardashvili’s late save. Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time strike was the final key moment and confirmed Liverpool’s progress.
Liverpool then went into the Carabao Cup fourth round while Tottenham was out of the competition. Also Liverpool had another example of their depth as a squad, and Spurs showed some attacking promise but not enough to take advantage of several chances.
