India opener Mayank Agarwal signed a four-game contract with Durham to complete the middle of the current County Championship Division Two season, a huge boost for the English side in its chase for promotion. The experienced batsman will join Durham in the final stages after South Africa international David Bedingham returned home to get ready for the Proteas' red-ball commitments.
Agarwal, who is 35, will bring experience to Durham’s top order as the club looks to make the move up to Division One of County Championship. He will then be part of the squad of head coach Ryan Campbell and in the team that will compete with Northamptonshire at the cinch County Ground in Durham next week. His arrival is at the heart of the season and Durham are currently ranked first in Division Two.
Campbell welcomed Agarwal's signing and said he was interested in bringing in an international-level batter to the team after Bedingham's departure. Durham's coach said the club would have wanted a good cricketer to continue the season and that Agarwal could play a key role in the promotion race.
Indian first-class experience comes to Durham to the Indian batter. Agarwal has made up 21 Test matches in his career, he has scored 1,488 runs at international level. His Test career has included 4 centuries and his highest score was a 243 against Bangladesh in Indore in 2019 on the field in 2019. He has been a representative in five One-Day Internationals and scored 86 runs for India.
Even in recent years his international career has been less prominent, Agarwal has still been able to maintain a good record in domestic and first-class cricket. He is on the verge of 9,000 first-class runs and has already achieved 21 centuries in the format. And his experience at the top of the order will be valuable for Durham in the tense final of the County Championship.
Agarwal has experience of English cricket. He played for Yorkshire at the end of the 2025 County Championship season and made a massive impact. The Indian cricketer scored 201 runs in his time and scored 175 against Durham in what happened to be his final innings for Yorkshire. The previous experience in English conditions would help in making himself part of Durham’s team.
Then again, the move provides Agarwal with another chance to showcase his skills in overseas first-class cricket. County Championship cricket is known for testing batters with long periods of time, weather conditions and movement off the pitch. For an experienced opener, this challenge is a chance to be part of a promotion campaign and still pursue his own competitive career.
Agarwal’s career is not limited to Test and first-class cricket. He has more than 5,000 T20 runs and has represented six Indian Premier League teams. He has played in all formats so he has a very good batting ability but also a general understanding of professional cricket.
The Bengaluru-born batter was also part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's title-winning 2025 IPL squad. He came to the team as a late replacement for injured Bangladeshi batter Devdutt Padikkal, which is yet another contribution to his career in Indian domestic and franchise cricket.
The decision by Durham to bring Agarwal into the team is indicative of the importance of squad depth at this stage of the County Championship. With international players leaving their counties for their own county duties so quickly for national duty, teams in league competition that are battling for promotion will need experienced players to come in and quickly adapt to first-class cricket.
Agarwal’s promotion opportunity is even more acute as Durham is currently at the top of Division Two and has a good chance to push up. The responsibility of his job will be to hold the top of the batting order together and the team will be able to convert their strength into a successful end of the season.
His signing also adds to the growing presence of Indian cricketers in the English domestic season. There are a number of Indian players who are currently in county teams including Manav Suthar at Warwickshire and Kuldeep Yadav at Yorkshire. Surrey also has India leg-spinner Rahul Chahar and batting all-rounder Mahipal Lomror in its squad, while seam bowler Auqib Nabi is also expected to feature.
And for Agarwal, the four-match Durham deal is yet another opportunity to prove his red-ball credentials outside India. Durham is a calculated deal to improve the team at the very moment when every game can have a big impact on the promotion race.
With the County Championship Division Two campaign coming down to the wire, Durham will hope Agarwal’s experience, technique and knowledge of English conditions will make all the difference. His short-term presence brings the club a top-order player and could prove instrumental when Durham finally hopes to win promotion and return to Division One.
