Namibia produced another memorable performance against South Africa, defeating the Proteas by 18 runs in the opening match of the T20I tri-series between Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The result gave the hosts a huge advantage in the competition but Namibia also got a special record in Associate cricket.
The victory was especially significant because it was Namibia's second T20I win over South Africa. Namibia's first victory against the Proteas came in 2025, when Namibia won by 4 runs in another tri-series. By defeating South Africa for the second time in the shortest format Namibia had become the first Associate nation to beat the Proteas twice in men's T20I cricket.
The Netherlands is the only other Associate side to have defeated South Africa in a T20I and that was what the Dutch achieved at the 2022 T20 World Cup that was so important in South Africa's early exit from the tournament.
Namibia Make Strong Start With The Bat
South Africa won the toss and decided to bowl first in order to get pressure on the hosts. But Namibia’s opening pair responded confidently and gave their team a great platform.
Jan Frylinck and Louren Steenkamp added 84 runs for the opening wicket, which placed Namibia in a strong position during the first half of their innings. Steenkamp contributed 41 runs from 29 deliveries before South Africa finally broke the partnership.
Frylinck continued to attack the bowling and played one of the key innings of the match. The Namibia batter scored 60 runs from 38 balls with six fours and two sixes. Namibia kept momentum going with his aggressive play, South Africa making a comeback in the middle overs.
South Africa's bowlers picked up wickets regularly towards the end of the innings. Prenelan Subrayen took three wickets while Bjorn Fortuin had two. Namibia still managed to score runs and eventually ended up with 163/9 from 20 overs, leaving South Africa a target of 164.
South Africa's Chase Falls Short
The Proteas needed a solid start to their chase but Namibia's bowlers quickly put them under pressure. The South African batters didn’t convert their starts and it was the visitors in trouble early in the innings.
Dewald Brevis had become South Africa’s strong bat and was the main hope at the time. The young batter delivered an attacking innings and kept the chase alive with a quick 75 off 50 balls. He had four boundaries and five sixes and South Africa needed that attacking side.
Brevis’ innings gave the Proteas a realistic chance of completing the chase. But Namibia continued to fight and refused to allow the batter to take complete control of the match.
His dismissal in the 18th over was the turning point. South Africa’s hopes of reaching the target quickly faded with Brevis back in the pavilion.
Trumpelmann And Smit Deliver Under Pressure
Namibia's bowlers played a crucial role in defending what appeared to be a competitive but chaseable total. Ruben Trumpelmann took three wickets for 24 runs in four overs led the attack.
JJ Smit also made an important contribution, taking three wickets for 31 runs. Their ability to take wickets at key moments prevented South Africa from building the partnerships required for a successful chase.
Duan Jansen tried to keep the Proteas' hopes alive and remained unbeaten on 25 from 17 balls. However, the required run rate continued to climb after Brevis' departure, and South Africa ultimately finished on 145/9 in 20 overs.
Namibia therefore achieved an 18-run victory and secured one of the biggest wins in their T20I history.
Another Milestone For Namibia
The victory is another big step forward for Namibian cricket. The victory over a full member country once can be considered a major upset for an Associate side, but twice has shown Namibian team cricket has improved in international cricket.
Their victory also gives hosts confidence at the start of the tri-series. Now that Zimbabwe have completed the three-team competition, Namibia will now look to build on the historic opening performance as part of the title winning team and take the series crown.
For South Africa, though, defeat will be a bad start to the tournament. Brevis' individual performance was so impressive, but the team was unable to build momentum in the chase and couldn't complete it.
Namibia’s 18-run victory will be remembered as a landmark in Associate cricket. They have shown again that they can contend with the best international teams and have now made their name in the history books as the first Associate nation to beat South Africa twice in T20I cricket.
