NZ Coach Rob Walter’s Big Challenge For Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: ‘Pacy And Bouncy Wickets’

Rob Walter, New Zealand head coach, is looking forward to seeing India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi face a different challenge when the two teams meet later this year. India are scheduled to tour New Zealand for a full-fledged series of T20Is, ODIs and Tests and Walter is keen to see how the young batter adapts to New Zealand’s typically fast and bouncy conditions.

Sooryavanshi has become one of the most talked-about young players in Indian cricket. The 15-year-old made his India debut earlier this year against England and has quickly attracted attention with his aggressive batting approach.

Now, with the upcoming New Zealand tour to be a totally different test from the ones in India, Walter wants to see how the kid responds to pace and bounce.

Rob Walter Wants to See Sooryavanshi On Fast, Bouncy Wickets

Walter said he would like to see Sooryavanshi play on New Zealand pitches and see how his game translates to those conditions.

“I’d love to see him on pacy and bouncy wickets and see how different that looks,” Walter said.

New Zealand coach Rob Walter noted the impact Sooryavanshi has already made against top quality opponents. He mentioned the teenager’s performances in the IPL, where he has faced and attacked some of the world’s best bowlers.

Walter believes the next challenge is how that aggressive style translates when the conditions are different.

“You’ve seen him dominate against the world’s best bowlers in the IPL. I think the challenge is always to see how that translates to different conditions,” he said.

New Zealand coach also indicated that his team would be interested in forming a strategy to contain the young batter on home soil.

New Zealand Looking Forward to the Challenge

Walter also spoke about the competitive aspect of the competition of India and Sooryavanshi. He said that from a coaching perspective there is value in putting players under pressure and watching how they respond.

At the same time, “secretly as a coach, you always want to see your players under a little bit of pressure and how we respond to that,” Walter said.

The comment underlines the challenge that both teams will face in the T20I series. India will have a strong T20 setup and New Zealand will have familiar home conditions.

Walter also made it clear that New Zealand will have to prepare for more than just Sooryavanshi. Even if the youngster does not feature, India has a number of other established and emerging players capable of making an impact.

India's Full-Fledged New Zealand Tour

India’s tour of New Zealand will start with a five-match T20I series on October 22 in Christchurch. The second T20I is expected on October 24, followed by matches on October 27, October 30 and November 1.

The other T20s will take place in Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton after the first match in Christchurch. The series will provide India with an opportunity to test its T20 combination against New Zealand in conditions that traditionally assist fast bowlers.

The T20I series will be followed by five ODIs. The first ODI is scheduled for November 4 in Auckland and the rest in Wellington and Hamilton. The last two ODIs will take place on November 13 and November 15 in Mount Maunganui.

The tour will conclude with a two-match Test series. The opening Test will begin on November 19 in Wellington, and the second Test in Christchurch on November 27.

Sooryavanshi’s Adaptability In Focus

Sooryavanshi could use the New Zealand tour to show his flexibility. His attacking style has made him an interesting prospect for Indian cricket but playing in different conditions is a fresh challenge.

New Zealand pitches can offer greater pace and bounce than many surfaces in India, potentially testing a young batter’s technique, shot selection and ability to adjust his approach.

Walter’s comments suggest that New Zealand will be particularly interested in how Sooryavanshi handles those conditions. At the same time, the Indian teenager will have an opportunity to test himself against an international attack in unfamiliar surroundings.

With India and New Zealand playing in three formats, the upcoming tour will present a wide spectrum of analysis of the visitors. But for Sooryavanshi, the T20I series could be the first time he can show at least whether his aggressive style can translate into the pacy and bouncy wickets of New Zealand.
