Accused tried to cover up the murder as unnatural death so that nobody suspects them and police is not informed. Malkhed police in Sedam taluk reportedly busted the conspiracy and nabbed Ambika wife and Maruti lover of accused. Victim was Siddarama. The incident took place on November 3 and shock and concern has gripped residents of the region.

The police investigation revealed that Ambika was having an extramarital affair with Maruti. She used to give sleeping tablets to her husband so that she could spend time with her alleged lover without his knowledge.

Accused thought Siddarama would sleep and wouldn’t know about their relationship. But in the early hours of morning when Siddarama woke up suddenly he found his wife sleeping with another man in their room. He reportedly confronted his wife and Maruti after seeing it and they got into an argument.

The confrontation allegedly turned violent. The available reports say that Ambika and Maruti joined hands to murder Siddarama after he caught them together. They allegedly kicked him in private parts, hit his head repeatedly with a grinding stone and assaulted him fatally.

The way the crime was allegedly committed has made the case particularly disturbing as investigators are looking into how the accused tried to hide what actually happened to Siddarama.

After the alleged murder, the accused reportedly tried to make it look like an unnatural death as against a planned crime. The body of the victim was allegedly placed on the bed and Maruti escaped from the spot after the incident.

Ambika reportedly acted as if nothing unusual had happened and told family members that her husband died under suspicious circumstances. She went to police and lodged a complaint saying it was an unnatural death. This gave an impression initially that Siddarama's death was not natural.

But police were not satisfied with the facts and went on to investigate further. While investigating, they say they found some suspicious details which made them look into the case more closely. Police investigation gradually revealed alleged inconsistencies in the wife’s account.

On questioning and examination of evidence available, allegedly Ambika was found to be in relationship with Maruti and both were involved in the murder.

The police eventually arrested Ambika and Maruti too. The arrests were said to have revealed that the unnatural death complaint was part of an attempt to cover up murder and avoid criminal suspicion. Both accused were produced before court and remanded to judicial custody.

Malkhed police has registered a case and legal proceedings are on to establish the complete sequence of events.

This incident has once again shown that police investigations need to be thorough if circumstances surrounding a death seem suspicious. An unnatural death complaint might initially lead investigators to conclude accident or unexplained medical emergency but they have to look at evidence, witness statements and medical findings before making conclusions (in this case the alleged attempt to make murder an unnatural death failed as police investigation revealed details).

The shocking incident has stirred up debate on domestic relationships, betrayal and violent confrontations. Siddarama’s death has also left his family members and relatives in grief.

The case is now before the legal system and allegations against both accused have to be established through judicial process. More details about investigation, forensic findings and sequence of events will come out as the case progresses.
