SA20 Commissioner Graeme Smith Credits IPL Franchises For League’s Rapid Success

South Africa's top franchise-based T20 competition, SA20, is set to enter its fifth season and league commissioner and former Proteas captain Graeme Smith highlighted the huge contributions of IPL franchises in the development of the tournament to a more sustainable cricket business.

With six teams in the league, SA20 is one of the top T20 leagues outside the IPL. Durban Super Giants, Joburg Super Kings, MI Cape Town, Paarl Royals, Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the league's six teams and all six teams are owned by IPL franchise groups.

The tournament has a wealth of IPL experience in franchise management, player recruitment, commercial operations and team development.

Smith explained in the season 5 auction that setting a solid foundation was one of the biggest priorities when SA20 was being designed. The former South Africa captain said Cricket South Africa’s decision to bring in outside investment as well as a major broadcaster helped establish the foundation for the competition to become a sustainable business.

Smith said the organisers had engaged with more than 40 potential investors in the process of establishing the league. In the end, the six IPL franchise owners gave SA20 a solid base from which to develop its teams and commercial structure.

IPL Franchises bring professionalism to SA20

The involvement of IPL franchise owners has been beneficial to the franchise owners more than just money. Their experience of running one of the world’s biggest T20 teams has helped us develop a professional approach to player management and team operations in South Africa, Smith says.

As a consequence of the way SA20 league owners invest in players and run teams, this is an important part of the league’s development, the commissioner said. The IPL organisations are also established ones of which players are able to work in professional situations and get experience in a high-level franchise competition.

The six franchises have also benefited from the connections to the cricket ecosystem. SA20’s association with IPL teams has enabled international players to be attracted to the league and South African cricketers to play alongside such experienced players from other countries.

Smith’s investment, professionalism, and global participation have been the cornerstone of SA20’s development in the first four seasons as well as the development of the competition during its first four seasons.

SA20 Provides Platform For South African Talent.

Although the commercial success of SA20 has been the focus, Smith said the competition’s contribution to South African cricket remains one of its most significant achievements.

The league provides a platform for a large group of South African players to compete at a high level every year. Smith said almost 60 to 70 of the country’s top talents get the opportunity to perform on the SA20 stage annually.

That exposure is especially important to players who want to make the Proteas. Regular competition against international cricketers can help young players learn how to play while some of the older South African players are still involved in the game.

The objective was not only to create a commercially successful tournament but also to build a strong base for South African cricketers, Smith said. The competition is therefore central to the country's domestic cricket ecosystem.

SA20 And The Proteas’ Recent Rise.

Smith also linked the development of SA20 to the recent performances of South Africa’s national teams. The Proteas reached the semi-finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup and the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup before making another semi-final appearance at the 2026 T20 World Cup.

South Africa also won the World Test Championship cycle from 2023 to 25, winning an ICC title and ending a long wait for a major international trophy. For a country where for several years there had been a lot of uncertainty about the future of cricket, these results have been a huge boost.

Smith believes SA20 has provided a more stable and structured environment for players in the country’s cricket system. The tournament’s ability to bring together leading domestic and international talent has created another pathway for players looking to develop at the highest level.

Building A Sustainable Cricket Ecosystem.

One of SA20’s biggest successes has been the development of an efficient structure that is capable of producing a tournament every year. To run a franchise league at scale requires good administration, broadcasting, commercial partnerships, player management and logistics.

Smith said the league has been able to build a good operational team and the competition is put in order every season. That consistency has allowed the tournament to get more established and provide players and franchises a predictable professional environment.

For South African cricket, the longer-term importance may be to establish a sustainable link between domestic cricket, franchise cricket and the national team as well. With the top players playing regularly in SA20, the tournament will help selectors find talent even more closely.

As SA20 prepares for its fifth season, Smith’s comments underline how the league has evolved out of external investments, IPL franchise ownership, professional management and a focus on South African talent. The tournament is still evolving as a worldwide T20 event but the contribution to the country’s cricketing system remains at the core of its purpose.
