India had a new chapter in Indian cricket today as Shubman Gill was brought to Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium to take charge of India's Test team for the first time as captain on the first day of the new year. Shubman Gill will lead a relatively inexperienced and young side in the one-off Test against Afghanistan from June 6 to 10.

Gill is one of the youngest Indians to lead the side in the longest format, named Test captain only last month. He is a clear change in the team at this point in time and his selection is a sign of a movement towards youth, but the team management will also see some experience alongside the young talent in the team.

A Blend of Youth and Experience. Gill’s team is a picture of this vision. He has also got some of the most talented young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant who are back with fresh energy and grit. KL Rahul, who is also a vice-captain, provides senior leadership, while Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav have proven wicket-taking skills in home conditions as well.

Most notably absent from the team is pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who has been rested for this match. His absence puts more pressure on Siraj and the bowling attack. Practice Underway

Gill was in action immediately upon arrival. The team went to work at Mullanpur ground, which will host only its second Test match since hosting England in 2024. Gill was in high-level discussion with head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak before the Afghan challenge.

Fielding drills, net sessions, and center-wicket practice have been planned intensively over the next two days. The team management wants to ensure that the young captain feels settled and the squad gels quickly.

A Strong Start to a Packed Season. This one-off Test will inaugurate India's 2026 Test season. A busy home schedule in addition to series with big teams will follow. Gill’s first Test as captain is a test for longer-term leadership prospects.

Afghanistan, while not completely new to Test cricket, has grown rapidly and will see this as an opportunity to disrupt a top-tier team. Their spin attack, with veteran campaigners, could test India's young batting lineup. All eyes will be on June 6 when Shubman Gill walks out for the toss not only as an opener, but as India's new Test captain.
