The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially confirmed that regular Test captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the series-deciding match due to a persistent neck injury. In his absence, wicketkeeper-batsman and Vice-Captain Rishabh Pant will lead the side at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

Gill Ruled Out Due to Injury Risk

Gill sustained the injury—diagnosed as a neck spasm—while batting in the first innings of the first Test in Kolkata. Though he traveled with the squad to Guwahati and has been discharged from the hospital, the BCCI medical team advised against his participation to prevent aggravation and ensure full recovery for the upcoming limited-overs series.

The decision comes as a major blow to Team India, which is trailing 0-1 in the two-match series following a 30-run defeat in the opening game. Pant had already led the side in Kolkata after Gill was forced to retire hurt and could not take any further part in the match. This will mark Pant’s first time officially captaining the Indian team in a Test match.

A New Look Playing XI in a Must-Win Match

The injury opens the door for a change in India's batting lineup. Left-handed opener Sai Sudharsan, who was already with the squad, is the frontrunner to replace Gill at the top of the order.

The team management is also contemplating other changes for the Guwahati track, which is expected to offer turn and bounce despite a green tinge. Young all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was recalled to the squad, is also in contention, potentially coming in for a spinner like Axar Patel to add depth to both the batting and pace departments.

The Guwahati Test is a historic event, marking the first time the venue hosts a men's Test match. The match will also have an unusual schedule with a 9:00 AM start and Tea being taken before Lunch to accommodate the early sunset in India's far east.

Rishabh Pant now faces a "baptism by fire" as he assumes the captaincy in a must-win scenario, with the pressure squarely on the hosts to level the series.
