Shubman Gill turns 27 on 8 September 2026, and this is a new step in a cricketing journey that has taken him from a promising teenage prospect to one of the most influential players and leaders in Indian cricket. Gill was born in Fazilka, Punjab, in 1999 and has built a reputation as a stylish and prolific batter, along with leading India in Tests and ODIs.
Gill is the youngest batsman to get a call-up to senior cricket as soon as the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup, when India won the title. His performance at this tournament made him one of the country’s brightest young batsmen to be called up and set the stage for his subsequent call-up.
He made his ODI debut in 2019, but it was India’s trip to Australia in 2020-21 to play his first international match in the year 2020 that really brought him to the international stage. Gill showed remarkable temperament in his first Test series in Australia against a strong Australian bowling attack. He made 45 and 35 in his first match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and a half-century in Sydney and a 91 in India's most famous Gabba win.
His first Test century was in 2022 in Chattogram. Gill had one of the best innings in ODI cricket one year later. At the age of 23, he scored 208 off 149 balls against New Zealand, becoming the youngest player to score an ODI double century. He is the fastest ODI batsman to score 2,000 and 2,500 runs.
Gill continued to make himself a key member of India’s batting unit during the 2023 ODI World Cup and scored more than 350 runs as India reached the final. He was part of the Indian team that won the 2025 Champions Trophy, another big international prize in his growing résumé.
The 2024 home Test series against England is another major chapter. Gill played a key role in India's 4-1 series win and also made centuries in Visakhapatnam and Dharamsala and also made crucial runs in Rajkot and Ranchi.
Leadership was developed along with his batting career. Gill took over as captain of Gujarat Titans in 2024 when Hardik Pandya left the team in the IPL. The next season, he took the team to the playoffs again and continued to perform well with the bat. He scored 650 runs in IPL 2025 and 732 runs in the 2026 season.
Gill’s biggest leadership role came after Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket when he was appointed captain of India’s Test team for the 2025 England tour. Gill didn’t let the weight of his responsibility affect his batting, and made one of the best Test series of his career.
He scored 754 runs at an average of 75.40 across the England series, including four centuries and a career-best 269. His total was the second highest by a captain in a Test series, behind Don Bradman’s 810 runs in the 1936-37 Ashes. India ended up with a 2-2 draw in the series.
Gill had already taken charge of India's ODI side by September 2026, so he’s now Test and ODI captain at just 27. He recently led India to a 1-0 victory in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka.
His career numbers also give a clear indication of his rapid development. Gill had 3,043 runs from 43 Tests and 11 centuries after the Sri Lanka series. In ODIs, he had 3,379 runs in 67 matches at an average of 60.33 with nine centuries and a highest score of 208. In T20Is, he had 869 runs from 36 games with a century.
Gill is thus going to be at a critical stage of his career. The prodigy who once dominated the Under-19 World Cup is now carrying the expectations of captaincy and becoming one of the central figures of India’s next generation.
