India's vice-captain Tilak Varma set a historic personal milestone in the third T20 International against West Indies when he became the fifth Indian fielder to take 50 catches in the format. While the left-handed batsman had an unusual run-out in Indore on Sunday, October 11, his position as a fielder was among the biggest names in Indian cricket.
Tilak joined Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Virat Kohli in the elite list of Indian players who have 50 catches in T20 Internationals. In just 68 T20I appearances, he achieved the landmark to show his contribution to India's fielding efforts as well as his stance as a batter.
Tilak has a catch ratio of 0.757 per innings, according to the figures. He is also the only Indian fielder to take 50 outfield catches in T20Is. And that record is indicative of the consistency in the field - taking chances and making the most out of tough situations can really help in making things happen in a match.
International player Muhammad Waseem of the United Arab Emirates has a marginally higher catch ratio. Waseem has taken 76 catches in 99 performances with a ratio of 0.767. Tilak’s numbers are just short of the global standard, and he is also among India’s top five fielders in the shortest international format.
Most Catches by Indian Fielders in T20Is
The list of Indian players with the most catches in T20 Internationals is littered with a number of big names. Rohit Sharma leads the list of the group with 65 catches, followed by Hardik Pandya with 64. Suryakumar Yadav takes 58 catches, while Virat Kohli has 54. Tilak Varma has 50 catches.
These numbers show the contribution of experienced players and young players to India’s fielding quality. Tilak’s achievement in a relatively short international career is just one more step in his growing record with the national team.
Unusual Run-Out Overshadows Part of Tilak’s Performance.
Tilak’s milestone was achieved in a match that also had an unusual dismissal. Tilak and Axar Patel appeared to believe that West Indies fielder Kamil Pooran had touched the boundary rope while trying to stop a shot in the 17th over of India’s innings.
The two batters had finished one and gave a fist bump, apparently expecting to see the umpire give them a boundary. Pooran had held the ball down in the playing area and was returning it soon. Tilak couldn’t react.
While Axar reached safety at the striker's end, Tilak was run out at the bowler's end after failing to realize that the ball remained in play. The third umpire confirmed the dismissal, leaving his innings in a peculiar fashion.
Tilak scored 28 runs in 16 deliveries with four boundaries. Despite his dismissal, India carried on with their scoring and ended their innings at 223. Abhishek Sharma had a huge attacking effort and scored 69 in 30 balls to help India to a difficult total.
India leads 2-1 in the T20I Series.
India's bowlers followed up the strong batting performance with an effective effort to restrict the West Indies. Arshdeep Singh took three wickets, while Naman Dhir took two, helping limit the visitors to 209/7.
The hosts won by a 14-run victory and went 2-1 ahead in the five-match T20I series. India was able to gain a lead in the match, and the remaining games will give both sides the opportunity to cement their position.
For Tilak, the Indore match had two contrasting moments. His run-out was a little confusing because of the boundary call, but his 50th T20I catch was a great personal achievement. As he continues to make his way into the Indian side, his batting and fielding record will remain very important in international cricket.
The achievement also shows how fielding statistics can make a player’s value not only more than the number of runs and the number of wickets taken but also why that is so. In T20 cricket, when matches can come down to the wire, good catching is very much part of the team’s overall performance.
