India need something special to stay alive in the fourth T20I against New Zealand and all eyes are on middle order batter Tilak Varma. The hosts have set a massive target of 260 runs at Eden Park in Auckland on October 30, 2026 and India will be up against it in their chase.
At the latest available live update India were 121/6 after 11.1 overs. They needed another 139 runs off 53 balls. Tilak Varma was at the crease with Naman Dhir and the responsibility was huge.
India Face a Mountain to Climb
New Zealand put up a powerful batting performance as they scored 259/7 in their 20 overs. Glenn Phillips was the star with a brilliant century while Indian bowlers struggled to restrict runs at that rate.
India started the chase hoping for another run fest but regular wickets put pressure on the visitors and made their middle order work hard.
India need an extraordinary partnership and aggressive batting with six wickets already down. Tilak’s ability to cope with pressure could be one of the biggest factors in the remaining overs.
Tilak Varma's Heroics Against New Zealand
Tilak has already proved that he can do it when India are in trouble. In the second T20I against New Zealand on October 24, he scored a match-winning unbeaten knock of 51 runs off just 26 balls.
India were chasing 181 and were at 70/5. It looked bleak but Tilak remained at the crease and forged a partnership with Nitish Kumar Reddy.
The two put on an unbeaten 69 in just 30 balls. Tilak’s calm batting and attacking shots helped India win by four wickets with one ball to spare.
That innings showed he could stay calm under pressure. That’s the sort of performance India need again.
His Match-Winning Knock Against England
Tilak has also scored important knocks against other strong opponents too. In the second T20I against England in Chennai on 25 January 2025 he scored unbeaten 72 off 55 balls.
India were chasing 166 and wickets fell regularly. When they were down to 146/8 Tilak didn’t give up. India won with four balls to spare in a thrilling two-wicket victory.
His ability to hang in there till the end and finish off close matches makes him an important player in India’s batting line-up.
Can Tilak Create Another Memorable Finish?
The task is bigger at Eden Park too. India need a very high run rate and the other batters have to back Tilak up with an aggressive approach.
Naman Dhir will also have a role to play. They need to find boundaries regularly but not take unnecessary risks and keep the scoreboard moving.
Tilak has already shown he can turn a bad situation into a winning one but to repeat that feat against New Zealand’s attack will take something special.
India fans will be hoping he can produce another innings of magic. Will he pull off a miracle or not? We don’t know but his previous heroics have made fans believe.
