Who Is Kush Maini? The Indian Racer Making Formula 2 History With Silverstone Podium

So much of our motorsport sector has got another reason to rejoice. Kush Maini, the country’s brightest racing talent, made his first Formula 2 Feature Race podium of the 2026 season with a perfect third place at Silverstone. He is now in the spotlight again and can become India’s next Formula One driver.

Maini's success may seem like an overnight breakthrough for many Indian sports fans, but his journey has been years in the making. Kush was born on 22 September 2000 in Bengaluru and belongs to one of India's most influential motorsport families. He is the younger brother of racing driver Arjun Maini and the nephew of electric vehicle pioneer Chetan Maini. Racing has always been a part of his life and at a young age he started karting before moving up the international single-seater ladder.

Maini first made a name for himself in Formula 4 before moving on to Formula Renault Eurocup and BRDC British Formula 3 Championship, where he became one of the most promising young talents. His regular performances allowed him to win his way into FIA Formula 3, later Formula 2, the last step before Formula One.

His rise has not been easy. Maini has switched teams in Formula 2 for several years now in search of a competitive package, racing for Campos Racing, Invicta Racing, DAMS and ART Grand Prix. Although moving teams can often slow a driver down, Maini has always been resistant to change and flexible - qualities very much valued in motorsport. Before joining ART Grand Prix for the 2026 season he had already won several races and earned several podium finishes in Formula 2 and he was already one of the most experienced drivers on the grid.

Maini also has a growing Formula One presence. He is in the Alpine Academy and also a reserve driver with Alpine's Formula One team. He is also part of Mahindra Racing as a reserve driver in Formula E. He can be in close proximity to top engineers and simulators as well as always be in the mind of the Formula One teams.

A victory at Silverstone could be the turning point in his 2026 campaign. Maini started at the front of the grid and it took a composed, mature performance coming back to third place in the Feature Race to make his first Feature Race podium of the season. Feature Races are far more important in Formula 2 than Sprint Races as they produce more championship points and are more similar to Formula One races. A win at Silverstone will be a big boost for him in the championship and he is established within the paddock.

Maini’s already shown he can win under pressure. In another record-breaking moment he won the Formula 2 Sprint Race earlier this season becoming the first Indian driver to win it in the championship. That, and the Silverstone podium, show he is finding consistency at a key stage of the season.

What makes Maini’s story even more significant is the context of Indian motorsport. Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandhok have been in Formula One for a long while and India is in search of the next great driver who can reach the very top of motorsport. A very long drive from Formula 2 to Formula One is the most competitive, but Maini is among the strongest Indian candidates in recent years.

His development is also supported by one of the sport’s greatest names. Two-time Formula One world champion Mika Häkkinen has mentored Maini and helped him to improve both his driving and his approach away from the track. That mentorship along with Alpine’s support has provided valuable guidance for the Indian driver as he pursues his Formula One dream.

Every podium will matter and every point will matter in the 2026 Formula 2 season. Maini’s Silverstone performance has not only given him confidence but the motorsport world has also reminded us that India has a driver with the ability to contend with the very best at Formula One. If he can keep it up this way for the rest of the season the dream of seeing another Indian on the Formula 1 grid is no longer distant.
