The internet has been mesmerized by the video of a Vande Bharat Express train as it glides on the Chenab Rail Bridge in the fog and clouds surrounding the mountains. Virtual images of the white train floating over clouds and the mountains of the Chenab Valley in Jammu and Kashmir have made it one of India’s most celebrated travel experiences. Now a crucial piece of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, this grand bridge is the ultimate bridge connecting the Kashmir Valley by railway to the rest of the country.
It is so tall, it is the world’s highest railway arch bridge, standing higher than the Eiffel Tower (a height of 359 meters or 1,178 feet above the Chenab River). With a length of 1,315 meters and over 25,000 tonnes of steel, in the mountainous environment of the Himalayas this is one of the most ambitious engineering projects of all time. Project engineers faced daunting geographical and logistical challenges - narrow mountain roads, harsh weather, steep topography, rocky slopes, and unstable conditions that made moving heavy machinery and structures to such a remote site a challenge.
To meet these pressing demands, we built the structure to the highest levels of global safety standards, with state-of-the-art solutions that are capable of handling strong seismic activity, high wind loads and operating in extreme stress. Modern technology brought our vision to life and engineers used advanced 3D modeling software for the arch, high-resolution satellite images and extensive geological surveys to design and calculate pillar load-bearing capacity, and to understand valley dynamics. Satellite records of the decade-long evolution of the project will show the project evolving from a dream to a finished national project.
In addition to the amazing architecture and structure, the Chenab Rail Bridge and the services it will offer (and the Vande Bharat Express) are turning into a game-changer for the mobility of people in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) as well as for the economy of Jammu. Since the rail connection is not only free from dangerous roads and in less travel time, it helps in year-round commerce and employment. The monsoon season is one of the best; it transforms the trip into an experience to remember and the height of engineering and the beauty of the Himalayas can be merged in a world-class way.
