The Highland Natural Adventure Foundation (HNAF) has officially launched its much anticipated Mount Kangyarrag Expedition, with the team hoping to reach the summit by early August.
The ambitious expedition marks another step forward in high elevation adventure and brings together experienced mountaineers, support staff and adventure lovers to tackle one of the toughest peaks in our region.
The expedition officially opened with a flag-off ceremony, where team members emphasized environmental stewardship and safety as the focal points of the event. The participants had months to prepare and are trained in the gym at altitude, on the trail and in technical climbing skills so they should be ready to go back on the mountain.
Mount Kangyarrag is a challenging terrain, weather-beaten-down landscape for experienced climbers. The mountain is so remote that the logistics for the equipment climbing gear, food items, medical supplies, etc. and the communication devices are very specific.
HNAF officials said we are not just climbing the mountain but also are pursuing adventure tourism, environmental conservation and youth participation in outdoor adventure. The team will document the trip, take environmental photos and raise awareness for our fragile mountain ecosystems.
The expedition route will be divided into a series of acclimatisation camps before the final summit attempt. Climbers will gradually ascend to higher elevations, so they will avoid altitude sickness and adjust to the reduced oxygen levels. Weather conditions will greatly affect the time frame for the summit and the team will be closely monitoring the weather conditions to prepare for the final summit.
This is the most important element of safety on the expedition from here forward. HNAF has deployed experienced expedition leaders, certified climbing guides and medical personnel to be ready to help the team. Emergency evacuation plans and satellite communication systems have been established to respond quickly in the case of unforeseen circumstances.

Adventure experts believe that mountaineering expeditions are increasingly focusing on sustainable practices. The HNAF team will follow the “Leave No Trace” principles by minimizing waste, protecting natural ecosystems and returning all non-biodegradable materials to the mountain.
