The government of Madhya Pradesh has taken another step in its efforts to secure the designation of the historic city of Orchha as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
This initiative is to bring international recognition to one of India’s most inspirational heritage sites and to support conservation and international tourism.
Orchha was founded by Bundela ruler Rudra Pratap Singh in the 16th century on the banks of the Betwa River in Niwari District. Over the years, its grand palaces, ancient temples, royal cenotaphs, and great forts have been noted for their quality and history which are representative of the rich cultural and architectural traditions of the Bundela dynasty.
Its well-preserved monuments are a place to visit and continue to attract people from various parts of the world, from India and abroad.
Moreover, the state government has now taken the nomination process forward by submitting the necessary documentation to UNESCO. Orchha’s nomination dossier received by the state government is a big step in the process towards World Heritage recognition.
The town is considered to have "Outstanding Universal Value" according to officials and as such will be a candidate for UNESCO’s prestigious heritage list.
Orchha is home to many such iconic monuments, such as the grand Jahangir Mahal, the beautiful Raj Mahal, the sacred Raja Ram Temple, and the towering Chaturbhuj Temple. The royal cenotaphs on the Betwa River are also of historical importance in the city. Together they represent a perfect fusion of Rajput and Mughal design and the art of medieval India.
If Orchha is granted UNESCO World Heritage status, tourism and heritage conservation in the area will be positively affected. International recognition will probably increase the number of domestic and foreign visitors, and infrastructure investment, preservation projects, and jobs for local people will be enhanced.
The tourism-based businesses, artisans, guides, and hospitality services will benefit from an increase in visitor numbers.
The Madhya Pradesh government has always promoted the state as a leading cultural and heritage destination under the "Heart of Incredible India" campaign. The state has already established three UNESCO World Heritage Sites - Khajuraho Group of Monuments, Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi, and Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka.
Orchha’s inclusion would further strengthen the state’s position as one of India’s richest heritage tourism hubs.
People think that recognition from UNESCO would not only safeguard Orchha’s historic buildings and the local heritage but also promote international cooperation around research, conservation, and cultural exchange. Better protection of the city’s historical buildings and global visibility would ensure that the town’s unique architectural legacy is respected and safeguarded for future generations.
Residents, tourism stakeholders, and heritage conservationists have been excited about the government’s initiative and hope that World Heritage status will bring the city long-term economic and cultural benefits without damaging the history of the city.
With the UNESCO evaluation process on its way right now, Orchha stands closer than ever to joining the list of the most prestigious cultural heritage sites in the world.
If accomplished, it will be a proud achievement for Madhya Pradesh and better highlight the history and architecture of India on the global stage.
