Disciplinary action has been taken against police personnel for negligence in the Pradeep Poojary assault and abetment to suicide case, Udupi SP Hariram Shankar said on Wednesday.
The action comes after an internal inquiry was conducted into the conduct of police personnel handling the case. The SP said they had studied the findings of separate enquiry reports before taking action against the officers and staff concerned.
Speaking on the development, Hariram Shankar said that an enquiry report submitted by the Additional Superintendent of Police was sent to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Western Range for further action.
As part of disciplinary action, PSI Hiriyadka has been attached to the office of the DIG, Western Range, and disciplinary proceedings have also been initiated against him in connection with the alleged negligence.
Two Police Personnel Suspended Over Hospital Duty Negligence
In another development, two police personnel on guard duty at the hospital have been suspended.
Suspension was ordered as they were found negligent in discharging their duties (enquiry report submitted by Police Inspector of Women’s Police Station).
The SP said disciplinary proceedings would also be initiated against the two suspended personnel. This means that the department will look into their conduct further as part of the formal disciplinary process.
Enquiry Reports Lead to Departmental Action
The latest move follows an internal review of the police response and responsibilities associated with the case.
The report of the Additional Superintendent of Police was sent to DIG Western Range, and the Women’s Police Station Inspector’s findings were the basis for action against the two personnel posted at hospital security.
The departmental action was the attachment of PSI Hiriyadka to the DIG’s office, suspension of two hospital duty personnel, and initiation of disciplinary proceedings.
Police Department Faces Questions Over Case Handling
The disciplinary action put the conduct of police personnel involved in the case under scrutiny. Allegations of negligence are being looked into through departmental proceedings and will determine who is responsible for it.
The SP’s statement says the department has taken action based on the enquiry findings, but the outcome of disciplinary proceedings is yet to be announced.
What happens next will depend on the outcome of the departmental process and any further action taken by senior police officials.
The case brought attention to proper police procedures, timely response and accountability in serious assault and abetment-to-suicide cases.
